    Job Summary:

    The Access & OpportunityTeacher Specialist provides resources and supports to schools administrators paraprofessionals and teachers who work specifically with multilingual learners (MLs) to ensure equitable educational access and practices. This includes preparing and delivering professional development presentations providing assessment support and academic coaching modeling best practices participating in district-level committees and working with teams as they address the needs of multilingual learners in their school as they develop and refine their school Continual Improvement Plans (CIP).

    Essential Functions:

    • Provides professional development experiences in curriculum instructional strategies differentiation and assessment.
    • Demonstrates and modelsSheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) strategies.
    • Supervises implementation of WIDA standards materials for the district.
    • Participatesin assigned committees and task forces.
    • Participates in professional organizations e.g. WIDA NAPE or other related organizations.
    • Supports district-wide programs and initiatives.
    • Communicate with parents through telephone calls e-mails and other appropriate means as needed.
    • Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding the schools academic growth.
    • Provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment.
    • Maintain professional competence through professional learning activities provided by the school district and self-selected professional growth activities.
    • Participate in staff meetings as required.
    • Participate in appropriate educator evaluation procedures as per district guidelines.
    • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with state and district testing procedures.
    • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students parents colleagues and members of the community.
    • Understand and adhere to laws district policies and procedures.
    • Maintain effective working relationships with students parents school staff district staff and members of the community.
    • Demonstrate professional ethics as outlined by the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.


    Non-Essential Functions:

    Required Knowledge and Skills:

    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Strong computer and educational technological skills.

    • Knowledge and experience using the WIDA standards.
    • Knowledge of and successful experience implementing best classroom teaching practices in reducing the achievement gap.
    • Understanding of how Limited English Proficient Students are served within the Granite School District.


    Required Education Training and Qualifications:

    • Requires one of the following:
      • a valid Professional Educator License issued by the Utah State Board of Education one of the following license areas of concentration:
        • Early Childhood Education;
        • Elementary;
        • Secondary;
        • Preschool Special Education; or
        • Special Education; or
      • an equivalent license in another state or country.
    • Masters degree from a regionally-accredited university preferred
    • ESL endorsement required but may be completed after hire.
    • SIOP/WIDA certification required but may be completed after hire.


    Required Prior Experience:

    • Requires a minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience.
    • Experience in the following areas is preferred:
      • coaching teachers;
      • working with adult learners in professional development settings;
      • proficiency-based learning and grading;
      • teaching English Language Learners in a public school setting; and
      • working as a Lead Teacher for multilingual learners.


    Note: The District reserves the right to make specific requirements for this position however when prior work experience has been evaluated to be particularly pertinent some exchanges between training and experience might be authorized.

    Assigned Decision Making:

    • Empowered to make decisions regarding how to best support the growth and learning of assigned teachers.


    Non-Supervisory Interaction:

    • Engages in critical conversations with assigned team members and staff who are struggling to meet performance standards.
    • Interacts and collaborates with employees administrators secretaries and other staff members in schools.

    Working Environment:

    • Work takes place in a typical school environment.
    • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
    • Work may involve travel to multiple district schools or locations. Mileage can be reimbursed.
