Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH)

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TOD/HH) provides specialized instruction assessment and consultation services to students with hearing loss ranging from slight to profound. This position supports students across educational settings (birth21 as applicable) ensuring equitable access to communication instruction and social opportunities through collaboration with staff families and related service providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assessment & Evaluation

• Participate as a multidisciplinary team member in evaluations and re-evaluations for students with suspected or identified hearing loss.
• Conduct specialized assessments related to communication language development auditory skills and access to instruction as allowed per certification
• Interpret audiological and educational data to inform eligibility programming and services.

Instruction & IEP Services

• Provide direct (push-in and pull-out) and indirect (consultative) services aligned with IEP goals for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Deliver instruction in English and/or American Sign Language (ASL) based on student needs.
• Develop implement and monitor IEP goals in collaboration with team members such as speech-language pathologists and early childhood special education staff. Provide instruction in the Curriculum for D/HH students including:

Self-advocacy

Communication strategies

Assistive technology use

Social-emotional development

Classroom Access & Support

• Monitor and support both visual and auditory access within general and special education classrooms.
• Recommend and implement accommodations modifications and instructional strategies to improve access.
• Coordinate classroom support in collaboration with general education teachers and related service providers.
• Collaborate with an educational audiologist regarding equipment listening environments and student needs.

Consultation & Collaboration

• Serve as a consultant for IEP/504 plans and accommodations related to hearing needs. Provide guidance and recommendations following classroom observations and student performance reviews.
• Supervise and support ASL interpreters including providing feedback and ensuring effective service delivery.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including specialists serving students with dual sensory impairments (e.g. Deaf-Blind programming).

Family Engagement & Training

• Provide parent and caregiver education on hearing loss communication methods and assistive technology.
• Support families in understanding the importance of consistent hearing device use and/or communication systems (e.g. ASL).
• Conduct home visits when appropriate to support carryover of communication strategies and device use.

Transition & Life Skills

• Support students in developing independence and self-advocacy skills related to hearing needs.
• Assist with transition planning for postsecondary education employment and independent living

Program Development & Community Building

• Assist in developing and implementing curriculum and programming for D/HH students. Facilitate opportunities for students to connect with other D/HH peers to build identity and community.
• Support district efforts to build staff capacity in serving students with hearing loss.

Additional Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate records progress monitoring data and documentation in compliance with district state and federal guidelines.
• Stay current with best practices research and state requirements related to deaf education.
• Participate in professional development and pursue relevant certifications. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Valid teaching license with endorsement in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (or ability to obtain). Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred.
• Knowledge of audiological equipment assistive listening devices and communication strategies.
• Experience working with students across a range of ages and hearing levels preferred.
