Primary Purpose:

Coordinate and support assistive technology services for students with disabilities to improve access to instruction and participation in educational programs. Collaborate with campus staff related service providers and families to evaluate student needs implement assistive technology supports and provide training and consultation aligned with Individualized Education Program (IEP) requirements.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Masters degree in a related field
  • One of the following credentials:
    • Speech-Language Pathologist with Texas Licensure
    • Occupational Therapist with Texas Licensure
    • Physical Therapist with Texas Licensure
    • Valid Texas teaching certificate with Special Education Certificate
  • Willingness to attain assistive technology certificate through Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA)

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in public education including experience with assistive technology services

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of assistive technology devices services and implementation within educational settings
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to assistive technology and special education services
  • Proficient ability to evaluate student assistive technology needs and develop appropriate recommendations
  • Proficient ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams campus staff students and families
  • Proficient ability to provide training consultation and technical support related to assistive technology
  • Ability to interpret professional literature and apply research-based practices in assistive technology services
  • Proficient organizational interpersonal verbal and written communication skills

Key Responsibilities:

Assistive Technology Evaluation and Support

  • Evaluate the assistive technology needs of students with disabilities.
  • Conduct functional evaluations in educational environments to support student access and participation.
  • Develop recommendations for assistive technology devices and services based on student needs.
  • Select customize adapt maintain repair and replace assistive technology devices as needed.
  • Coordinate assistive technology services and supports aligned with student IEP goals and objectives.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Collaborate with campus staff related service providers and families to support implementation of assistive technology services.
  • Participate in Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) committee meetings for initial evaluations proposed changes or as requested.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to determine appropriate supports and services.
  • Coordinate with vendors therapists and insurance providers regarding assistive technology devices and related services.
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to campus staff students and families regarding assistive technology implementation and use.

Training and Professional Learning

  • Develop and provide training and professional learning related to assistive technology devices and services.
  • Provide training and support to parents and families regarding assistive technology use and implementation including home visits when appropriate.
  • Facilitate and support the district assistive technology team.
  • Maintain current knowledge of assistive technology practices devices and applicable laws and regulations.

Program Management and Compliance

  • Maintain a computer-based inventory of assistive technology devices and related equipment.
  • Manage assistive technology software applications and licensing across the district.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of district procedures related to assistive technology services and access.
  • Communicate updates related to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requirements and compliance.
  • Explore funding opportunities including grants and donations to support assistive technology needs.
  • Maintain accurate records documentation and reports related to assistive technology services.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to all district policies procedures and expectations as outlined in the employee handbook and administrative regulations.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participate in professional development faculty/department meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the department and district.

Tools and Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); participation in CPI physical interventions when necessary. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent districtwide and statewide travel

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
