Job Summary

Job Goal:

To administer plan organize and implement the instructional and support services program of the assigned school with the specific responsibility for directing overall site operations; to provide information and serve as a resource to others; to enforce established policies and regulatory requirements; to coordinate school activities and address any issues situations and/or problems that arise on campus or with enrolled students.

Qualifications (minimum education licensure skills and/or experience):

  • Bulletin 746 requirements for School Principal or Educational Leader.
  • Additional criteria the Superintendent and/or Board may establish.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The principal creates a culture to advance instructional practice and improve outcomes for all students by implementing and modeling the Louisiana Administrative Codes Professional Standards for Educational Leaders and the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) Principal Standards Rubric. The duties and responsibilities of the principal may vary from school to school within the district due to grade level and size of the school.

  • School Mission Vision and Strategic Goal Setting
    • Set ambitious data-driven goals and a vision for achievement; invest teachers students and other stakeholders in that vision.
      • Establish communicate and monitor school-wide goals expectations standards and vision using data.
      • Create an atmosphere for achievement of high academic expectations for all students providing a clear picture of the schools future.
      • Ensure that the school vision is lived in practice encouraging behaviors that support the vision and addressing behaviors that undermine the vision enlisting the support ownership and institutionalization of the vision from various perspectives and lenses.
      • Place data driven school level goals into the vision which describe how the vision will be attained; adjusting the goals as needed using student learning outcomes needs assessments observations of teacher practices and participation from stakeholders to ensure they are driving improvements in achievement.
      • Analyze data and uses feedback to drive decision-making.
    • Instructional Leadership
      • Facilitate collaboration between teams of teachers
        • Implement a curricular scope and sequence that fosters rigorous instruction and activities that are designed to cognitively challenge students using the Common Core Standards.
        • Supply curricular materials that are rigorous aligned with the appropriate rubric consistent with school wide growth and allow teachers to implement the curriculum with fidelity.
        • Establish a culture of learning where teachers identify and teach core academic skills across the curriculum and implement shared instructional practices to improve student achievement.
        • Develop a school culture that allows effective teaching and learning to occur through effective and frequent collaboration between teams of teachers.
        • Utilize schoolwide evaluation systems observations and individualized support plans to increase teacher and staff effectiveness.
        • Ensure teachers set clear measurable objectives that are aligned to state and national standards.
        • Observe teachers regularly and provide on-going actionable clear and transparent feedback on instruction. These observations will become a part of both formative and summative assessments of teacher effectiveness.
        • Ensure that all assessments are Common Core aligned.
        • Facilitate and support staff use of aggregate and disaggregated data to identify and prioritize students needs in relation to the Common Core Standards.
        • Regularly monitor teacher progress by reviewing assessments and lesson plans. Maintain teacher accountability for on-going analysis of student data to provide rigor differentiation rapid interventions and updated intervention assignments to reflect student needs and progress.
      • Capacity Building
        • Recruit hire retain and build the faculty and staff. Provide opportunities for professional growth and develops a pipeline of teacher leaders.
          • Expect and support the professional growth from all members of the teaching staff that is aligned with the vision of the school and the appropriate rubric.
          • Conduct and participate in team meetings to discuss trends strategies and support for teachers students and instruction.
          • Facilitate meaningful targeted professional development opportunities aligned to teacher needs and designed to improve instructional practice.
          • Promote Professional Learning Communities within the school and across the district.
          • Cultivate a pipeline of teacher leaders and develops their leadership skills to provide additional support to teachers in the school and allow them to take on additional leadership opportunities (e.g. Instructor Led Trainings)
          • Engage in self-reflection and growth opportunities to support high levels of learning for all students.
          • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
        • School environment/Community and Campus Culture
          • Create and maintain systems that ensure a safe and orderly school environment.
            • Ensure that the school building is clean and safe all basic facilities are in working order and that the physical plant fosters major academic priorities and initiatives.
            • Consistently implements and discuss across all classrooms an age-appropriate code of conduct with written values and beliefs that is aligned with district and school priorities.
            • Address and manage student behavioral issues fairly.
            • Create and support a positive climate and culture. Maintain a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) structure.
            • Conduct parent student and teacher conferences to discuss concerns. Develop plans and strategies where needed.
            • Prepare communication for families colleagues and the community to promote academic achievement and to accomplish the schools mission.
            • Represent the school within the community.
          • School Operations/Management
            • Manage fiscal physical and other resources to support student learning.
              • Allocate funds based on student needs and within the framework of federal state and board policies.
              • Seek and secure additional resources needed to accomplish school mission vision and goals.
              • Align time people space and other resources to achieve school mission vision and goals.
            • Ethics and Integrity
              • Model personal and professional ethics integrity justice and fairness and expect the same of others.
                • Demonstrate respect for all students staff family and community members.
                • Protect the appropriate confidentiality of students and staff.
                • Uphold district and school policies.
              • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Duties:

  • May serve at the direction of the Superintendent as a Principal Supervisor with the following responsibilities:
    • Evaluating and coaching the principal or facilitator of the school(s) or site(s) to which they are assigned.
    • Conducting weekly visits to provide coaching and/or support to principals and/or facilitators.
    • Address stakeholder matters and/or concerns relative to each school or site before being filtered to the respective district staff/department and/or the superintendent.

Principals shall be expected to perform the following duties along with the completion of corresponding documents forms and reports.

Self-Evaluation

  • Complete a self-evaluation and document the results on appropriate written forms.

Professional Growth Plan

  • Develop a Professional Growth Plan in collaboration with the evaluation.

Supervision

  • Supervise Assistant Principals Teachers and other employees reporting to the Principal position.
  • Complete and/or assist in the preparation/implementation of employee observations evaluations IAPs and other associated tasks and monitoring

Instructional Components

  • Fulfill duties traditionally expected of school based administrators.
  • Collaborate with those providing direct student instruction as well as professionals providing ancillary services.
  • Review draft study recommend and implement policies curriculum and plans to improve the quality of instruction.
  • Conduct school/class walk throughs.
  • Prepare and/or oversee preparation of class scheduling.
  • Participate in the staffing of school via the recruitment interview and selection and/or assignment of personnel subject to superintendent approval.

Non-Instructional Components

  • Maintain the campus in a clean condition through the oversight of custodial/maintenance staff.
  • Maintain student discipline.
  • Attend meetings generally associated with the instruction of students.
  • Attend faculty staff department and central office/principal meetings.
  • Establish school policies governing students and employees.
  • Attend training sessions.
  • Attend job fairs and related events.
  • Attend IEP meetings.
  • Attend Central Office and Department meetings.
  • Attend back-to-school and open-house events.
  • Attend graduation.
  • Interview employ and support the onboarding of necessary hires.
  • Attend PIP Evaluation Observation IAP and student discipline meetings/hearings.
  • Attend school board/committee meetings upon request.
  • Participate in the preparation of necessary disciplinary documents and corresponding disciplinary process for both students and employees.
  • Fulfill all duties required of the school as a member of the LHSM or other athletic or professional associations.
  • Maintain positive parent and community contact and problem solving.
  • Represent the school at all functions and/or meetings at which a school representative is required.
  • Represent the school/district at any extra-curricular activities as determined by the superintendent/assistant superintendent.
  • Meet with teachers or staff members to discuss school operations student progress or upcoming events.
  • Attend parent-teacher meetings or school events that are held in the evening.
  • Review and finalize school budgets reports or administrative tasks.
  • Participate in professional development workshops or training sessions.
  • Handle discipline issues or addressing any urgent matters that arise during the day.
  • Collaborate with community organizations or partners to support school programs.
  • Plan and strategize for future school improvement initiatives.
  • Attend school board meetings or other administrative responsibilities.
  • Support extracurricular activities or athletic events that take place after school hours.
  • Provide additional supervision or support for students who may need extra help or assistance.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move throughout the school campus including classrooms offices and outdoor areas.
  • Attendance and participation in various school events meetings and activities which may involve standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations including navigating the school premises swiftly and making critical decisions.
  • Extended periods of computer use for administrative tasks communication and data analysis.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying of materials equipment or supplies such as paperwork laptops or other office-related items.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel (Bulletin 130).
