Job Summary:

Under general supervision independently perform a full range of standard dispatch duties on rotating shifts. The incumbent will receive information complaintsrequestsand signals from a variety of communication equipment. The incumbent will accurately evaluate information and situationsdeterminea proper course of action anddisseminateinformation toappropriate personnel. The incumbent will handle police parking and other types of radio trafficmaintainall information in a computer-aided dispatch system (CAD) and perform other classification related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to use applicable computerized and automated dispatch and law enforcement systems tooperateand monitor radio and communication equipmentin accordance withFederal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and to dispatch units to emergency and non-emergency calls.

  • Regular use of judgment and discretion is necessary to set priorities for service calls.

  • Ability to read maps and floor plans toidentifylocations whereassistanceis needed; makes rapid determinations as to availability and proximity of the nearest emergency personnel and equipment;monitorsthe location and status of units in the field.

  • The incumbent assigns field personnelthrough the use ofthe computer aided dispatch system (CAD) system.

  • Receives and transmits information to units in the field.

  • Elicits and records pertinent andaccurateinformation and uses judgement and discretion to rapidly assess the nature and priority of the information and the necessary response.

  • Keeps the Watch Commander informed of situations involving officer safety anddispatchespersonnel according to operational needs.

  • Notifies otherjurisdictionsor public safety agencies upon officersupervisoror Watch Commander request.

  • Disseminates notifications toUniversityadministration and community.

  • Incumbent monitors radio transmissions from other law enforcement agencies andrespondsto requests for emergencyassistance.

  • Maintains working knowledge of City and University geography and streets to provide directions to officers in the field.

  • Interpret various laws regulations writtenpoliciesand procedures to successfully apply and adhere to them.

  • Makes inquiries into countystateand federal national computer data banks to obtain information requested by officers or other law enforcement personnel.

  • Entersupdatesand retrieves information on wanted persons stolen property vehicle registration stolen property/vehicle and other information from computer and teletype networks.

  • Sendsreceivesand decodes teletype information. Under general supervision may perform matron duties on occasion includes but is not limited to responsible for the well-being and safekeeping of lost or abused children or other individuals brought into the station; performs clerical duties as they relate to the service of the public and to the maintenance of police records.

  • Operates digital surveillance video data when requested.

  • Tests andinspectsequipment asrequired.

  • Reports faulty equipment to Supervisor.

  • Maintains and updates afterhourscall outs for the campus.

  • Operate other telecommunication equipment such as Live Safe Rave Gems Blackboard connectInformacast satellite phone and alarm monitoring system.

  • Provide administrative support to the department.

  • Provide other classification related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Entry to the first level within this classification typically requires one year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency within the last ten years and a high school diploma or equivalent. Essential entry qualifications require the ability to effectively use a phonetic alphabet speak clearly and concisely follow oral and written instructions transfer information accurately handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions effectively and learn the use of applicable automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases.

RequiredQualifications:

  • Working knowledge of legal codes requirements procedures and techniques for receiving complaints and calls for service and for dispatching and communicating with campus officers in the field.

  • Ability to effectively converse using police radio systems.

  • Working knowledge of public safety-related agencies and the respective communication protocols.

  • Achievement of the P.O.S.T. Dispatcher certificate.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to use applicable computerized and automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases to enter research and retrievedataas necessary.

  • Ability to independently respond and act quickly accurately evaluate information and situations and makeappropriate decisionsin routine non-routine and emergency situations.

  • Working knowledge of geographical layout and ability to read maps and floor plans to provide directions to officers in the field.

  • Ability to accurately interpret written policies follow oral and written instructions and transfer information.

  • Ability to provide clear and concise verbal directions quickly and accurately.

  • Ability to present and summarize information in a variety of written formats using clear and concise language.

  • Ability toestablishand maintain effective working relationships interact with all members of the campus community andpublicandmaintaincomposure in highly stressful situations or when dealing with difficult individuals.

  • Ability tomaintainthe confidentiality of sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • P.O.S.T. approved and certified candidates are desired.

  • Ability to quickly and calmly while exercising good judgment in emergency situations follow oral and written procedures rules of the FCC and 10-Code.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.

SpecialConditions

  • Candidates must pass a Cooperative Personnel Services Dispatcher Test unless theypossessa P.O.S.T. Dispatcher certificate.

  • Incumbents must have completed or be able to attend and successfully complete the Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Dispatcher Course.

  • Incumbents who upon hire do notpossessa P.O.S.T. Dispatcher Certificatealso willberequiredto pass a written test related to essential dispatching skills.

  • Additionally incumbents must successfully pass supplemental P.O.S.T. requirements for dispatchers such asa backgroundcheck physical and psychological examinations drug testing and related requirements.

License/Certifications:

  • Valid CA Drivers License

  • Incumbents must have completed or be able to attend and successfully complete the Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Dispatcher Course.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary offered willtake into accountinternal equity and experience among other factors.

Initial salary step placement will be Step 1-$4611permonthfor qualified candidates.

CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $4611- $6718per month (Step 1 Step 20)

Position Information:

Work status:Full-time/Non-Exempt/Temporary(up toone year with the possibility of further renewal)

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am 5:00 pm) some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm) some evenings/weekends.

Working Hours: Three 12-hour shifts with one 8-hour shift every other week
