Macon County Schools

Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean safe and orderly school environment that supports student learning and staff effectiveness. This position ensures that school facilities are properly cleaned maintained and secured in accordance with Macon County Schools policies and established health and safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain assigned areas of the school building including classrooms offices hallways restrooms cafeterias and common areas
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping mopping vacuuming dusting and disinfecting surfaces
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms replenish supplies and ensure proper hygiene standards
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly
  • Maintain floors through buffing waxing and other floor care procedures
  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks including replacing light bulbs and reporting repair needs
  • Set up and break down spaces for school events meetings and activities
  • Assist with moving furniture and equipment as needed
  • Monitor building security by locking/unlocking doors and securing the facility as assigned
  • Report safety hazards damages or needed repairs to supervisors promptly
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisors when restocking is needed
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment in a safe and effective manner
  • Assist with seasonal duties such as snow/ice removal weather-related cleanup and outdoor maintenance (as applicable)
  • Ensure compliance with health safety and environmental regulations
  • Maintain a safe working environment and follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals
  • Follow all Macon County Schools policies procedures and expectations
  • Demonstrate professionalism reliability and attention to detail
  • Maintain positive working relationships with staff and students
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration or facilities management

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods materials and equipment
  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and follow safety procedures
  • Basic understanding of building maintenance and repair needs
  • Ability to follow directions and complete tasks independently
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and supervisors
  • Dependability and strong work ethic

Physical Requirements

  • Medium to heavy work classification
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more as needed
  • Frequent standing walking bending lifting and reaching
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and machinery
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions

Evaluation

  • Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Macon County Schools evaluation procedures

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time or part-time position (may include evening or second shift)
  • Salary based on Macon County Schools salary schedule
  • Work calendar determined by the district

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous custodial or maintenance experience preferred
  • Ability to meet all Macon County Schools employment requirements
