Position Overview:

Boston Public Schools seeks an experienced environment health and safety professional to assist with the implementation and maintenance of the BPS Environment Health and Safety program and advise BPS on EH&S policies regulations and best practices.

The Senior Environmental Technician position resides in the Facilities Management Department within the Operations Division of Boston Public Schools and is part of the BPS Environmental Division reporting to the Sustainability and Environmental Resources Manager. The BPS Environmental Division is responsible for monitoring the environmental quality of BPS buildings and properties with an emphasis on improving air quality within classrooms utilizing simple integrated pest management (IPM) techniques managing asbestos and hazardous waste testing all water sources used for drinking and food preparation managing and updating fuel tank storage systems for environmental compliance and oversight of environmental site remediation projects. The Senior Environmental Technician will serve in a Midlevel role within Facilities Management.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the Boston Public Schools Environmental Health and Safety Division.
  • Advise Facilities Management on Environment Health and Safety policies and best practices.
  • Within 12 months of hiring shall obtain the Massachusetts Asbestos Inspector Massachusetts Asbestos Management Planner Massachusetts Asbestos Project Monitor and Massachusetts Asbestos Designer Licenses and be 40 hr OSHA Hazwoper and OSHA 10 hr General Safety trained.
  • Shall conduct asbestos inspections surveys and inspections in accordance with AHERA and NESHAPS and assess conditions and recommend and schedule response actions.
  • Shall assist in the maintenance of the BPS Drinking Water Quality Access Program and advise the Facilities Management on policies and best practices
  • Shall investigate and assess health and safety related complaints and potential hazards and recommend and schedule necessary corrective actions. These complaints and potential shall include but not be limited to the following: integrated pest management indoor air quality; general safety and sanitation; science lab safety; hazardous waste management; drinking water quality; lead paint etc.
  • Shall assist in the management and development of the following environmental health and safety programs:
    • Indoor Air Quality Program
    • Asbestos Management (AHERA) Program
    • Integrated Pest Management
    • BPS Science Safety Program
    • Hearing Conservation Program
    • Respiratory Protection Program
    • Hazardous and Universal Waste Management Program
    • Hazardous Communication Program
    • BPS/BPHC School Environmental Audit Program
    • Clean Water Act Annual Maintenance Program (Lab Wastewater Treatment System Maintenance)
    • OSHA Confined Space Program
    • NFPA Life Safety Emergency Generator Fuel Tank Inspection and Maintenance Program
    • BPS Drinking Water Quality Access Program
    • Communicable Outbreak Rapid Response Program
  • Shall be able to communicate environmental risks and solutions to all levels of BPS staff students and community.
  • Shall solicit estimates from vendors following all public procurement laws. Shall schedule and review work of vendors to ensure the orderly completion of work; may approve and sign invoices.

Qualifications - Required:

Education and Related Work Experience

  • BA or MA with a strong background in environmental/occupational hygiene health and safety; the physical and natural sciences (biology chemistry physics and engineering) and computer science and programming.
  • 5-10 years of professional experience in environmental and occupational health and safety.
  • Experience dealing with drinking water quality lead paint common Asbestos hazardous materials handling.
  • Experience with budgeting.
  • Experience communicating environmental and occupational health and safety issues.
  • Experience with implementing small and large EH&S projects coordinating with contractors and reporting on project results.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel Google Drive Suite and electronic communication tools like email and text.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and have daily availability of an automobile for travel to assigned schools.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.

Qualifications - Preferred:

  • Experience in a public school system and/or familiarity with Boston and Boston Public Schools.
  • Any of the following Licenses Registrations or Certifications:
    • Massachusetts Asbestos Inspector
    • Massachusetts Asbestos Management Planner
    • Massachusetts Asbestos Project Monitor
    • Massachusetts Asbestos Designer
    • 40 hr OSHA Hazwoper
    • OSHA 10 hr General Safety
