Location: Reference Laboratory Services (off-site); specimen pickup/delivery to 50 Irving St. NW Washington DC 20422
Start: July 2026
Shift Schedule:
- 24-hour turnaround required for all kidney biopsy specimens (same-day turnaround capability required)
- Services available as needed based on specimen submission volume
How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: TBD (based on patient volume and biopsy referral needs)
Certifications:
- Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology required
- Subspecialty training or certification in Renal/Nephropathology required
- Current and active medical licensure in any U.S. state or territory required
- Laboratory accreditation by CAP (College of American Pathologists) or equivalent required
Education: Medical Degree (MD or DO) with completion of an accredited Anatomic Pathology Residency and Renal Pathology Fellowship or equivalent subspecialty training
Experience Needed: Demonstrated experience providing expert renal pathology consultation and advanced laboratory testing on human kidney specimens; prior experience providing services to VA or other federal state or local agencies preferred
Special Skills Needed:
- Expert knowledge of renal pathology including interpretation of light microscopy immunofluorescence and electron microscopy for kidney biopsy specimens
- Ability to provide specialized reference laboratory testing and professional pathology consultation for kidney biopsies
- Capability to deliver 24-hour same-day turnaround on kidney specimens
- Knowledge of supplementary laboratory analyses applicable to renal pathology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for delivering pathology consultation reports
- Familiarity with VA and federal laboratory standards and regulations
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a reference laboratory for professional pathology services for the Washington DC VAMC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services
- Receive process and perform expert consultation and advanced laboratory testing on human kidney biopsy specimens submitted by the VAMC
- Provide specialized reference laboratory testing including light microscopy immunofluorescence electron microscopy and supplementary analyses as indicated
- Deliver completed pathology consultation reports with a 24-hour same-day turnaround for all kidney specimens received
- Provide expert written and verbal pathology consultation to the VAMC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as needed
- Ensure all laboratory testing and reporting meets or exceeds currently recognized national standards established by TJC CAP and applicable regulatory bodies
- Maintain full compliance with HIPAA VA information security standards and all applicable federal laboratory regulations throughout the period of performance
