Sr. Product Counsel

About the Role

Ariat is looking for a Senior Product Counsel to join our growing legal team. As the sixth member of our legal department you will serve as a strategic legal partner to the teams that bring our products to market advising on the regulatory compliance and privacy considerations that come with operating a global consumer brand.

Under the supervision of the Head of Legal you will help build and scale the compliance and privacy frameworks that support Ariats continued growth. This is a high-visibility role with the opportunity to shape programs from the ground up working directly with product development sourcing marketing and sustainability teams. You are extremely organized and proactive with a desire to learn and grow. You are customer-focused collaborate well with team members and cross-functional business partners and have experience working directly with outside counsel. Ariat is following a hybrid work model (minimum three (3) days onsite per week in the San Leandro CA office). We are considering local Bay Area candidates only or candidates who are willing to relocate to the Bay Area only.

Youll Make a Difference By

Product and Regulatory Advisory

• Serving as a go-to legal partner for product development sourcing marketing and sustainability teams advising on regulatory considerations throughout the product lifecycle.
• Advising on product safety environmental regulations and labeling requirements affecting footwear apparel and accessories including California Proposition 65 PFAS and other chemical restrictions Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws sustainability and ESG-related disclosure requirements supply chain transparency statutes (e.g. CA Transparency in Supply Chains Act UK Modern Slavery Act) and textile and labeling regulations.
• Monitoring tracking and analyzing developing state federal and global legislation and regulatory proposals and translating those developments into clear actionable guidance for business teams.
• Advising on compliance strategies for Ariats multi-state and international retail and e-commerce operations.
• Developing scalable compliance frameworks policies and procedures that support Ariats global growth while maintaining consistent standards across all markets.

Privacy and Data

• Advising on compliance with U.S. state privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA and emerging state frameworks) federal privacy requirements and international privacy regulations (GDPR where applicable).
• Partnering with cross-functional teams to provide guidance on data collection practices consumer data requests vendor data processing agreements cookie/tracking compliance and employee privacy matters.
• Drafting reviewing and maintaining privacy policies data processing agreements and related documentation.
• Supporting privacy impact assessments and advising on new technologies platforms and data initiatives.
• Monitoring and assessing new and evolving privacy legislation across U.S. states and relevant international jurisdictions.
• Assisting with other responsibilities as assigned based on business needs.

About You

• Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school licensed to practice law and in good standing in CA
• 5 years of legal experience with meaningful exposure to at least one of the following: regulatory compliance product safety privacy or consumer products law. You know how to manage risk effectively and translate legal requirements into practical business guidance.
• Experience working in-house or closely with in-house legal teams is preferred. We value lawyers who understand what it means to be a business partner not just a legal advisor.
• Prior experience with a consumer products retail or apparel brand is a plus but not required. We are more interested in strong legal judgment and a willingness to learn our industry.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with multiple stakeholders and teams on multiple projects at once.
• Strong attention to detailyou sweat the small stuff and strive to get it right the first time every time.
• Ability and willingness to take initiative to address problems and make continuous process improvements.
• Team player who manages well under pressure while maintaining a good sense of humor.

The salary range for this position is $170000 - $180000 per year.

The salary is determined by the education experience knowledge skills and abilities of the applicant internal equity and alignment with market data for geographic locations. Ariat in good faith believes that this posted compensation range is accurate for this role at this location at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
