About Us

On September 20 2024 legislation was tabled to establish The Department of Emergency Management. The Department brings resources programs and services under one roof for preparedness incident management and recovery which improves coordination communication and partnerships. The Department brings together the former Emergency Management Office from the Department of Municipal Affairs and the Business Continuity Program Office and the Public Safety and Field Communications Team from Service Nova Scotia. The new Department allows us to respond to emergencies more efficiently and in better collaboration with our partners across the province.

The Department of Emergency Management is responsible for leading disaster and emergency planning preparedness response and recovery activities on behalf of the Province of Nova Scotia. The objective of the Department is to ensure that Nova Scotians are safe prepared and resilient in the face of disasters and emergencies. The Department leads the coordination and co-operation of partners and resources during provincial-level critical incidents supports municipal and other partners in regional-level and local events administers the provinces 911 service maintains critical communications infrastructure and supports operations of our regional emergency management centres. The Department also works to ensure critical government services continue to function during and after critical events.

The Incident Management and 911 Branch is dedicated to ensuring the safety and resilience of our Province by:

  • Rapidly coordinating provincial response and critical infrastructure partner resources
  • Setting standards in the provincial emergency management program for training and exercising
  • Effectively managing incidents to minimize impact and restore normalcy as quickly as possible
  • Ensuring integrated emergency responses through the Provincial Coordination Centre
  • Managing and modernizing the emergency 911 system including the move to Next Generation 911

About Our Opportunity

Utilizing classroom and on-the-job training the Nova Scotia 911 Training Coordinator prepares 911 Call Takers across the province to function in a high-demand setting. Upon successful completion of training 911 Call Takers are responsible for answering 911 calls and connecting the people behind those calls to emergency first responders who can deliver the urgent help they need.

Primary Accountabilities

As the 911 Training Coordinator you will be responsible for providing:

  • In-classroom training and evaluation for newly hired 911 Call Takers and experienced 911 Call Takers returning from an extended absence;
  • On-the-Job Follow-up monitoring coaching training and evaluation for newly hired 911 Call Takers and experienced 911 Call Takers returning from an extended absence;
  • In-classroom refresher training for current 911 Call Takers and
  • Ongoing training bulletins conveying procedural/process updates and changes.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a bachelors degree with five (5) years of related experience in program coordination training and facilitation.


Key qualities of yours include:

  • A comprehensive understanding of learning and development principles and adult education
  • Experience providing and documenting feedback as well as developing and implementing training programs and materials
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Effective interactive communication skills (written and verbal) and group facilitation experience
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment
  • Comfortable working independently and bringing an innovative approach to your work incorporating changing technology and trends into your material
  • Encourage a proactive anticipatory approach to emerging issues within your field.

The following are considered assets:

  • An education degree or Adult Education Certificate.
  • Certificate in Project Management
  • Proficiency in eLearning development and design
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Enhanced 911 and Next Generation 911 (NG911) call-handling solutions.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination standardized tests oral presentations interview(s) and reference checks.

Equivalency

We recognize equivalent combinations of training education and experience providing opportunities for individuals with diverse backgrounds to contribute their skills and expertise. Equivalencies include but are not limited to:

  • A related masters degree and three (3) years of related experience
  • A related 2-year diploma and seven (7) years of related experience
  • At least nine (9) years of related experience

Working Conditions

This role is in a fast-paced decision-making environment. Your normal work week is 35 hours/week 7 hours/day. This role does entail a high volume of work which may require longer than normal working hours and overtime. You may be required to travel to worksite locations.

In an emergency/disaster situation you are obligated to work and will be called upon to return to work with little or no notice. These situations usually include stressful conditions (physical emotional and mental pressure) in the Provincial Coordination Centre (PCC) for unknown periods of time. During emergencies you will be required to be available to report to work 24/7/365.

Additional Information

This position requires a Federal Security clearance to the level of Secret and is required to take appropriate training related to supporting an Emergency Operations Centre during times of emergencies.

You must have a valid Canadian drivers license.

Pay Grade: PR 13

Salary Range: $2805.63- $3410.48Bi-Weekly
