Job Summary
Position Overview
The Head Lifeguard for Summer @ The Brook is responsible for overseeing daily aquatic operations and ensuring the safety of all campers and staff during pool activities. This role provides direct supervision of lifeguard staff maintains compliance with New York State Department of Health regulations and serves as the lead responder in emergency situations. The Head Lifeguard plays a critical role in fostering a safe well-managed and professional aquatics environment.

Dates: Late June Mid August (exact dates aligned with camp schedule) Reports to: Aquatics Director / Director of Auxiliary Programs
Key Responsibilities
Aquatic Supervision & Safety
- Ensure the safety of all swimmers during recreational swim periods and evening activities.
- Enforce all pool rules and safety protocols consistently.
- Conduct swim tests and monitor camper ability levels to ensure appropriate supervision.
- Staff Leadership & Scheduling
- Supervise and schedule lifeguards to maintain proper coverage and required ratios at all times.
- Provide ongoing supervision support and mentorship to lifeguard staff. Assist with staff training in-service sessions and performance feedback.
Operations & Compliance
- Oversee daily pool operations including opening and closing procedures. Ensure full compliance with New York State Department of Health and local regulations. Maintain accurate pool logs chemical records (as applicable) incident reports and safety documentation.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
- Lead emergency response efforts and implement Emergency Action Plans (EAPs). Ensure all lifeguards are prepared and trained to respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Conduct regular safety drills and reinforce best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or equivalent).
- CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification.
- Pool Activity Leader (PAL) Certification as required by New York State. Prior lifeguard leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

- Commitment to maintaining a safe and positive environment for campers and staff. Additional Requirements
- Completion of all required training and onboarding prior to the start of camp. Successful completion of background checks in accordance with New York State regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to remain on pool deck for extended periods.
- Ability to perform water rescues and emergency response as needed. Ability to lift assist or support individuals in emergency situations.
