Youll be based at our Rochester site where we make the essential lab plastics that help drive breakthroughs in vaccines biologic therapies and diagnostic kits. This campus is also the manufacturing site for Thermo Fisher Scientifics Nalgene labware and the Nalgene reusable water bottles produced for global distribution.

As part of our Laboratory Products Division youll be joining a team that provides virtually everything needed for laboratories across healthcare pharmaceuticals academia biotechnology and industrial research sectors. Our extensive product portfolio includes advanced analytical instruments essential lab equipment cold storage and a wide range of consumables like reagents chemicals and labware.

Reporting to the Tool Room Manager this position is responsible for the fabrication repair and maintenance of molds mold components jigs fixtures and specialized machinery. The role requires expertise in troubleshooting diagnosing and resolving mold-related issues ensuring optimal performance and functionality. This position also involves collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams to support production needs maintain high-quality standards and drive continuous improvement in tooling processes.

A Day in the Life:

  • Utilize standard measuring equipment and apply advanced mathematics including trigonometry and geometry to ensure precision in tooling and machine setups.

  • Interpret complex engineering drawings blueprints and sketches to design construct repair and modify molds tooling fixtures and related components.

  • Maintain proficiency in operating all Tool Room equipment and performing bench machine and finishing operations to condition and modify intricate plastic injection molds.

  • Disassemble inspect clean repair and reassemble mold tooling ensuring functionality and adherence to design specifications.

  • Select appropriate materials for tool construction and repair considering performance requirements drafts shrinkages and tool design.

  • Achieve required mold finishes efficiently while maintaining high-quality standards.

  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems using circuit diagrams test meters and other diagnostic tools.

  • Respond promptly to manufacturing support calls resolving mold and tooling issues to minimize downtime.

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance repairs parts replacements and labor hours.

  • Construct and repair machine shop tools gauges fixtures and dies to ensure effective toolroom operations.

  • Collaborate with engineering teams on special projects and assignments to support organizational goals.

  • Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols for machine operations and tooling activities.

  • Assist with troubleshooting and repairing mold-related production issues.

Other Duties:

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance mold design efficiency and durability.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area ensuring compliance with safety and housekeeping standards.

  • Assist in training apprentices or junior mold makers as needed.

  • Operate various hand tools measuring instruments and machining equipment to support other production needs.

  • Participate in team meetings safety training and process improvement discussions.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management.


Education:

  • Successful completion of a four-year apprenticeship or equivalent demonstrable experience is required.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience as a Journeyman Mold Maker is essential.

  • Proficiency in mathematics including trigonometry and geometry.

  • Valid certification to operate both stand-up aisle lift trucks and electric or gas sit-down forklifts.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong technical understanding of tool and mold design materials and operations.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.

  • Skilled in the use of Tool Room machinery and precision measuring tools.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and handle complex projects with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to tooling and equipment maintenance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

  • Capable of lifting and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Exceptional manual dexterity fine motor skills and precise touch required for completing intricate work without compromising valuable molds.

  • Strong visual acuity to interpret blueprints and conduct detailed inspections.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position Lead Skilled Tradesman based in New York is $32.00$36.00.
