Working 36.5 hours per week

This is a hybrid role primarily homebased with office attendance required as needed. Currently this involves one day per week in the office although this arrangement may change.

The Public Health Division works across the council plan and is responsible for providing strategic leadership to develop the Council into a local authority that actively promotes population health. This will be achieved by being able to visualise and describe what a healthy Birmingham looks like and then equip others to share our vision and take action. We achieve this by championing the improved health and wellbeing of all citizens but especially the most vulnerable.

Our vision is to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of Birminghams population by reducing inequalities in health and enabling people to help themselves.

The work of the Public Health division is underpinned by three values:
Equity
Prevention
Evidence based practice.

This role will be based within the Children and Young People Team in Public Health. This team leads the work on Children and Young Peoples Public Health and oversees the commissioning of many mandated public health services including the Healthy Child Programme.

The role will focus on addressing health inequalities of young people with additional vulnerabilities including young people not in education employment or training; those at risk of unplanned pregnancies and young people experiencing transition points up to 25 with a clear consideration of diversity throughout. This person will report to the Public Health Children and Young People Team Senior Officer.

This role is designed for someone who has a passion for improving and protecting the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Birmingham especially the most vulnerable. You must have some working knowledge of the Children and Young Peoples Agenda. Strong negotiation communication and written skills are essential for this role.


This is an ideal opportunity for somebody who:

  • Has experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholder in supporting Public Health outcomes.
  • Can interact with diverse communities of Birmingham and is passionate about reducing health inequalities.
  • Has experience of delivering performance and governance arrangement and developing and implementing improvement programmes.
  • Understands the role that the Health and Wellbeing board can play to improve health and wellbeing.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of Public Health priorities.
