Position Description

Title: Special Education Instructional Assistant - Summer Program

Department: Migrant Education Program

Supervised by: Teacher and Director of Migrant Education

Position Purpose:

To assist a certified teacher in providing instruction to students or small groups which facilitate student success in academic and interpersonal skills with a focus on supporting special education needs.

Core Job Functions:

  1. Assists with implementing the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each assigned student.
  2. Assists special education staff with preparation implementation and evaluation of individual and group instructional and/or behavioral programs.
  3. Assists in communicating with teachers and parents on a students progress.
  4. Assists with record-keeping to monitor students daily learning progress.
  5. Assists students in understanding instructional and/or behavioral concepts by reemphasizing the basic elements of teacher directed activities.
  6. Provides students with additional practice on identified skill areas.
  7. Assists with the preparation of instructional and/or behavioral for classroom activities.
  8. Guides independent study and remedial work set up by the teacher.
  9. Sets up and operates audio-visual and other instructional equipment.
  10. Checks student work corrects papers that do not require subjective evaluation and supervises testing and make-up work.
  11. Secures and stores instructional materials as needed by the teacher or students.
  12. Supervises students during instructional and non-instructional activities including hallways lunchroom playground gymnasium and library and bus lines.
  13. Keeps records and charts of student progress.
  14. Assists in filing sorting alphabetizing data collecting and organizing materials.
  15. Enforces classroom and school rules in a consistent manner and follows guidelines for implementation of disciplinary actions.
  16. Detains students for alleged misconduct and delivers students to appropriate authority.
  17. Performs routine clerical tasks including maintaining records copying cutting stencils alphabetizing and filing materials operating office equipment preparing basic art work and typing lists and reports.
  18. Maintains a positive and effective relationship with students staff parents and patrons.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Reports incidents (fights suspected child abuse substance abuse etc.) to maintain personal safety of students provide a positive learning environment and adhere to district policies.
  2. Participates in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
  3. Maintains regular attendance at work and work activities; is punctual in meeting deadlines attending meetings and following schedules.
  4. Performs other duties as may be assigned by classroom teacher Director of Migrant Education or Superintendent to support the success of the agency.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Patience understanding and ability to work with young students
  • Appropriate and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and follow precise prescribed directions
  • Read write translate and interpret English and Spanish preferred
  • Appropriate classroom procedures and basic instructional techniques
  • Criminal history background check/fingerprint clearance

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalency
  • Experience with supporting special education students
  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education possess an associates degree or passed a certificate program demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading writing and mathematics readiness

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the core functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment could be low to moderate. The work is mostly indoors but requires going outdoors in the weather for periods of time. Physical requirements: See; hear; speak; use of hands for single grasping pushing or pulling and fine motor manipulation; frequently bend squat lift sit and climb stairs; lift 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; and may be required to run and/or physically restrain a child.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Columbia Gorge ESD Board policy on evaluation.

Terms of Employment:

Number of days per year as per program calendar. Employment will generally take place on days when students are present.
