Guardant Health Inc. is seeking an experienced and motivated Staff Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property (IP) Team.
As a member of the IP Team you will be responsible for providing guidance on a wide range of IP and general legal matters related to the cancer diagnostics field. You will combine your legal and technical knowledge to implement and execute the companys IP strategy for Guardants growing patent portfolio. The technology you will be exposed to is critical to Guardants mission of improving the lives of cancer patients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage a global patent portfolio including preparing and prosecuting patent applications conducting invention harvesting activities and evaluating the patentability of invention disclosures.
- Partner with members of the IP Team to support patent portfolio development and execution of the companys intellectual property strategy.
- Coordinate with and manage outside counsel in connection with patent prosecution and other IP-related matters.
- Conduct patentability infringement and validity analyses and provide recommendations regarding associated risks and mitigation strategies.
- Educate scientists and other employees on patent-related matters and support invention disclosure and patent filing processes.
- Provide IP counseling to research and product development teams regarding patent protection and related intellectual property considerations.
- Support intellectual property aspects of litigation disputes licensing activities and commercial transactions as needed.
- Monitor developments in relevant technology and competitive patent landscapes to help inform patent portfolio decisions.
Qualifications
- Typically a Bachelors Degree with 812 years (or 68 with Masters / 35 with PhD/PharmD/MD)
- Registration with the USPTO
- Advanced degree in Molecular Biology Bioinformatics Computational Biology; Cancer Genomics Genetics Statistics or similar field (preferred)
- 8 years of relevant patent prosecution experience including at a law firm and preferably further including at least 3 yearsin-house experience
- Experience with drafting prosecuting and reviewing patent applications focused on methods for analyzing genomic data from diagnostic next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays
- Understanding of algorithms and tools used in cancer genomics (e.g. sequence alignment variant calling)
- Excellent communicator project manager excellent at meeting deadlines keeping manager updated on work products and team player
- Strong interpersonal skills and be willing to work closely with scientists managers and employee teams
- Adaptable flexible and creative in a rapidly changing environment.
Highly Preferred:
- Familiarity with library preparation methods used to generate NGS data including targeted sequencing whole-genome sequencing methylation sequencing or RNA-seq
Hybrid Work Model: This section is applicable to onsite employees who are eligible for hybrid work location as specified by management and related policies.
