About the Department - Facilities Management
Mount Royal Universitys Facilities Management (FM) department is responsible for the planning development construction design operation maintenance safety security and stewardship of all the buildings infrastructure sites and services within Mount Royals campus community. Through efficient and environmentally sustainable operation we offer grounds custodial building operations facilities planning security services and engineering professional services to provide a physical environment that supports and enhances our academic space for students and staff. Our team of professionals are dedicated to providing customer service excellence. Our staff respond to daily service requests and emergency/ priority situations as needed.
About the Role
Reporting to the Manager Central Plant & Mechanical the Energy Management Specialist will monitor control and optimize the Universitys energy consumption to conserve usage reduce costs and minimize environmental impact.
This is a full-time two year limited term positionworking7 hours per day five days per week Monday to Friday. Overtime may be required to meet timelines.
Responsibilities
Energy Initiatives
- Responsible for developing and implementing energy initiatives with a focus on energy conservation
- Developand implementprojects to help achieve goals outlined in the Energy Management Plan
- Conductenergy audits identifycost savings opportunities and developbusiness cases aroundthese opportunities
- Stayapprised of and leadthe application process for financial incentives/rebates/grants related toenergy for applicable projects within the capital planning and FM teams
- Actas an integral stakeholder for new capital projects to help guide decision-making to align withMRUs long-term energy management goals and policies
- Workwith energy management partners to develop energy saving proposals and infrastructureimprovement measures
Utility Administration/Budgets/Tracking/Measuring
- Performmonthly utility invoicing and cost/consumption review and analysis using EnergyCap andother online sub-metering software solutions
- Supportreconciliation of the utilities budget
- Reportto ministries and government bodies as required for provincial and federal regulationsStatistic Canada energy production surveys etc.
- SupportFM with energy monitoring verification auditing and procurement activities
- Coordinatethe sourcing installation and calibration of energy submetering as required andcoordinates using portable metering to assist in the measurement of energy for projects
Procurement Practices Contract Administration & Technical Support
- Workwith procurement for purchasing energy efficient equipment and establishing best practicesand policies in purchases
- Supportthe oversight of utility procurement contracts for MRU
- Developtender specifications for energy projects including recommissioning and coordinates workwith consultants contractors trades and project managers
- Provideregular technical support to projects and operations groups to improve the efficiency andreliability of mechanical and electrical systems
Planning/Policies/Procedures/Design Standards
- Developand overseeMRUs Energy Management Plan
- Createenergy policies and procedures to foster energy efficient practices across the university
- Developenergy designs and performance standards for projects and operations groups andsupports the capital planning process
Energy Engagement Education & Awareness
- In consultation with Communications developand implementcommunication strategiespromotional materials and educational information to support program goals.
- Engageinternal stakeholders to align work with energy goals and objectives
- Developand presentinformation to groups throughout the organization as required
- Promoteenergy efficiency and strategies for reduction within the organization
Qualifications
- 2 Year Diploma in Engineering Technology or Energy Managementis required
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Energy Manager in Training (EMIT) would be an asset
- 5 - 8 years of experience is required including:
- Strong technical background in building systems including HVAC CHP building automationsystems energy monitoring systems lighting motors speed drives
- Demonstrated understanding of:
- Provincial and federal energy regulations and reporting
- Energy utility and contract management
- Performing financial analysis and business case development
- Energy standards energy audits energy calculations
- Applicable building codes and standards
- Demonstrated competency / expertise in:
- Electrical and mechanical building systems
- Information gathering and data analysis
- Managingprojects and developing reports
- Energy cost analysis
- Energy conservation practices ideally in an educational setting
- Proficient in computer software including Microsoft Office Archibus EnergyCap energy/utilitymanagement software building automation software RETscreen
- Advanced analytical planning and problem-solving skills
- Facilitation presentation and training delivery skills
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independentlyorganize prioritize and expedite workflows.
Salary: $69487.60 - $87978.80 per annum ($71580.60 - $90617.80 per annum effective July 1 2026)
