Description of Work

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Onslow County Maintenance Unit.

On a regular and recurring basis employee operates at least 2 pieces of equipment (backhoe tandem dump truck motor grader front end loader forklift force feed loader asphalt distributor asphalt patcher crack sealing machine track excavators skid steer or sweeper) in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks such as hauling asphalt aggregate or soil materials plowing snow spreading salt compacting asphalt compacting embankments sweeping roads loading ditching material and disposing of roadside debris.

Transportation Worker III may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level position. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Work to include but not limited to installation of traffic & erosion control devices clearing of right of way roadway grading machining unpaved roads pavement repair pipe installation or other drainage tasks inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Must have the ability to act upon both verbal and written communications. May perform a variety of other assigned duties.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 / $35596 - $62294

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance pipe installation or asphalt patching.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe tandem dump truck motor grader front end loader forklift force feed loader asphalt distributor asphalt patcher crack sealing machine track excavators skid steer or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

Safety-toed shoes required. Skill in the safe use & care of assigned equipment hand & power tools & perform manual maintenance duties & other duties as directed by supervisor. Must have ability to act upon both verbal & written communication to traverse steep & uneven terrain to lift 50 lbs. & to work in extreme temperature conditions.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience
