Job Summary

SUMMARY:

Air Force Junior ROTC is a full program and not confined to the regular school day and not confined to the classroom. Air Force Junior ROTC instructors conduct academic classes during the regular school day but also supervise Leadership Development Requirements (LDRs) after regular school hours. LDRs are experiential learning activities like drill teams academic bowl teams marksmanship teams etc. A robust and successful AFJROTC program will often have several active LDRs at any time of year.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Responsibilities for All Instructors

Exhibit only the highest levels of personal and professional conduct while serving as an Air Force Junior ROTC instructor.

Perform duties accept responsibilities and meet standards as prescribed by applicable Department of Defense (DoD) Air Force and Air Force Junior ROTC instructions.

Supervise directly all cadets participating in official AFJROTC unit events AFJROTC community service events and other unit activities (e.g. drill competitions curriculum-in-action trips base visits etc.) that enhance or supplement the program.

Instructional Strategies and Classroom Management

Prepare for and teach periods of instruction of 45 to 90 minutes each for as many as 7 periods per day depending on a particular schools schedule.

Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the Districts and JROTC curriculum programs and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.

Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials equipment and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency board policies and administrative regulations.

Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.

Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals objectives and methods according to district requirements.

Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.

Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Instructional and Program Management

Coordinate and lead a variety of school activities possibly held before or after each school day both indoors and outdoors. These after school activities may include physical training events academic clubs rocketry teams marksmanship teams along with performing drill instruction and demonstrating drill sequences.

Exemplify a positive image of the Air Force at all times by conducting themselves in a highly professional manner in both their words and their actions.

Incorporate Air Force Junior ROTC-approved interactive learning software/hardware with classroom instruction and have a competent knowledge of curriculum planning Air Force educational programs drill and ceremonies and educational administration including tests and measurements.

Staff Development

Complete the mandatory Air Force Junior ROTC Instructor Certification Course (JICC) as a condition of certification.

Complete any additional state and/or local school district mandated teacher certification or continuing education requirements. Any additional certification requirements above the basic Air Force Junior ROTC instructor certification must be accomplished at no expense to the Air Force or school district.

Policy Reports and Law

Maintain a professional military appearance in uniform and to comply with Air Force Junior ROTC weight and body fat standards.

Maintain confidentiality.

Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile maintain file and secure all physical and computerized reports records and other required documents.

Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research.

Comply with all policies operating procedures legal requirements and verbal and written directives.

Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.

Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Bachelors Degree

HQ AFJROTC provides the basic certification for all AFJROTC Instructors to teach in AFJROTC. No instructor can become (or remain) an AFJROTC instructor without the certification granted by HQ AFJROTC.

Texas Teacher Emergency Permit for Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC): Grades 6-12 (application made by school district)

Experience:

Enlisted instructors are retired noncommissioned officers who normally have at least a bachelors degree. All enlisted instructors have extensive experience in leadership supply administration drill and ceremony teaching and many have extensive experience working with youth groups.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Extensive experience working with youth groups

Knowledge of design and implementation for AFJROTC-approved curriculum

Ability to interpret data and evaluate instruction programs and teaching effectiveness

Ability to develop and deliver training to students in a range of ages and maturity levels and coming from different socio/economic backgrounds.

Strong organizational communication teambuilding and interpersonal skills

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None

MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

Tools/Equipment Used:

Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals

Posture:

Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Strong physical stamina

Physical drills (running marching and others as specified by AFJROTC curricula)

Motion:

Repetitive hand motions frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting:

Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment:

Work to be completed on-site from assigned school or building

Regular exposure to noise and computer monitors

No remote work

Frequent districtwide travel

Occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands:

Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress work; prolonged or irregular hours
