Job Title: GIS Specialist Location (On-site Remote or Hybrid): Buckeye AZ (onsite) Contract Duration: Contract until 06/30/2026 Work Hours: 1st shift
Position Description This position involves working with geographic data in a Global Information System (GIS). Required to use GIS mapping software to review existing maps for accuracy identify and correct discrepancies and update the spatial data as needed. Tasks include comparing GIS linework (such as street curb lines) to aerial imagery to ensure the map reflects real-world conditions. Adjust map attributes-such as names and classifications-so that each data point remains consistent complete and properly documented. The position will spend much of their time navigating digital maps verifying alignment between visual features and associated data and helping maintain the integrity of the citys spatial database. Accuracy attention to detail and clear recordkeeping are key to success in this position.
Skills Required
Focus on entry-level software and data skills that support municipal GIS work.
Basic GIS Skills Familiarity with ArcGIS or QGIS
Ability to review and update attribute data
Experience using spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel
Basic data entry and data validation skills
Skills Preferred
Familiarity with: GPS data collection Editing GIS features (points lines polygons)
Basic understanding of: Data quality control Metadata documentation File organization and naming standards
Currently enrolled in or completed coursework in: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Geography Environmental Science Earth Science Urban Planning Civil Engineering Technology Geomatics or Surveying Technology
Education Preferred
Completion of at least one introductory GIS course Enrollment at a local community college GIS certificate or associate program
Additional Information Responsibilities:
Review GIS layers for missing or outdated information
Update attribute information based on provided records
Assist with data entry and data cleanup
Verify GIS data against aerial imagery
Demonstrate reliability and punctuality
Ability to work independently after training
Willingness to learn municipal data standards Interest in public sector GIS applications
