Job Summary
Full-Time; Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year
The Theater Arts Teacher provides engaging standards-based instruction in theater arts fostering student creativity performance skills and appreciation for dramatic arts. Instruction includes acting stagecraft and theatrical production with opportunities for students to participate in performances and collaborative projects. The teacher creates an inclusive and dynamic learning environment that supports student expression confidence and artistic growth while aligning instruction with the Virginia Standards of Learning and relevant arts standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree with a major or minor in Theater Arts or a related field
- Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement(s)
- Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming absence of contagious tuberculosis
- Must meet all pre-employment screening requirements
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teach theater arts courses to secondary students using curriculum frameworks and instructional materials approved by the School Board.
- Plan and deliver instruction in acting stage movement voice theater history and production elements.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that promote creativity collaboration and performance skills.
- Provide students with opportunities to engage in performances rehearsals and production-based learning experiences.
- Shape and direct student activities to support meaningful engagement in theater arts.
Program Development & Student Engagement
- Plan rehearse and direct student performances productions and related events.
- Coordinate stage productions including set design costumes lighting and technical elements as appropriate.
- Encourage student participation in theater programs and extracurricular activities.
Instructional Strategies & Differentiation
- Use a variety of instructional strategies including modeling rehearsal techniques and collaborative learning.
- Provide individual and small-group instruction to support diverse student needs and abilities.
- Integrate technology and multimedia tools to enhance instruction and production quality.
Assessment & Student Progress
- Evaluate student progress through performances projects and skill-based assessments.
- Provide constructive feedback to support student growth in performance and technical skills.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and participation.
Classroom & Environment Management
- Establish and maintain a safe organized and productive classroom and performance environment.
- Maintain inventory and proper use of theater equipment props and instructional materials.
- Ensure safe use of stage equipment and facilities.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with parents guardians and school staff regarding student progress and program activities.
- Collaborate with colleagues administrators and support staff to support student success and school programs.
Professional Responsibilities
- Teach up to four instructional blocks per day with one block designated for planning grading and conferences.
- Maintain professional competence through district-provided and self-directed professional development.
- Participate in faculty meetings committees and school programs.
- Supervise students during assigned activities within and beyond the school day as related to performances.
- Participate cooperatively in the districts evaluation process in accordance with established guidelines.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of theater arts performance techniques and stage production
- Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and arts-based pedagogy
- Ability to direct coach and support student performances
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with students staff and the school community
- Proficiency in the use of instructional technology and production-related tools
- Strong organizational classroom management and collaboration skills
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in classrooms auditoriums and performance spaces.
- Duties require frequent walking standing bending stooping and lifting.
- Work may involve extended hours during rehearsals and performances.
- Work involves exposure to normal day-to-day conditions and routine risks associated with a school environment.
Supervision & Reporting
The Theater Arts Teacher reports to the school principal or designee and performs duties in accordance with division policies curriculum standards and instructional guidelines
