Pay rate of $19.941 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of $22.938 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills.

Job Duties:

Construction Technicians are responsible for field inspection of heavy highway construction projects. Construction Technicians perform materials testing on concrete asphalt soils and other materials as required. They verify the contractors work is completed in accordance with the project plans and specifications. Construction Technicians routinely read and interpret plans contracts and specifications and they also record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor as well as a diary of the construction activities as they occur throughout the day. All official records are maintained digitally and technicians will be expected to utilize computers and various programs daily. Construction Technicians perform various survey tasks utilizing rods levels tape measures and GPS equipment. Individuals will be expected to be able to work both as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision. This position assists with snow removal on highways and may be required to operate snowplows during winter weather events. Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Highway Construction Technician I: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license.

Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying materials testing or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying materials testing or inspections practices and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in surveying road construction materials testing record keeping trigonometry and geometry. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including work processing spreadsheets SiteManager GEOPAK and MicroStation software.

Other: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. To qualify for the Hwy Construction Technician II classification applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid by the order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level applicants must have passed the NDOT Math Highway Plan Reading and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associates degree in civil engineering technology or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire you will be provided with the required training material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: standards and specifications used for various types of projects; instruments equipment and material used in surveying testing and inspection work; all phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other; surveying and testing techniques.

Skill in: calculating mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry; applying complex construction inspection surveying and materials testing techniques; using personal computers/laptops and associated applications and software including drafting spreadsheet and word processing software; using technical engineering equipment and instruments during assigned projects.

Ability to: interact with coworkers contractors consultants and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships; prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records; maintain surveying testing and inspection instruments and equipment; lift equipment and samples weighing up to 100 pounds; communicate with others in-person and by telephone radio and email; interpret and apply engineering plans and specifications; plan schedule and lead the work of coworkers during assigned projects; apply construction procedures in agency construction manuals and directives. Must be able to climb bend stoop walk long distances and work long hours possibly weekends in outdoor temperature extremes. Must be able to report to work within 45 minutes of notifications under normal conditions.
