BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The Geospatial & Intelligence Unit within the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service of (PRG-F) of the Program division manages and advances WFPs use of Earth Observation (EO) and geospatial data for humanitarian operations. The team maintains the Humanitarian Data Cube (HDC) a cloud-native scalable data platform that stores processes and analyzes large volumes of climate and EO datasets. Built using modern open standards and technologies the HDC supports diverse analytical workflows for monitoring environmental change assessing hazards and enabling anticipatory action.
As the availability of Earth Observation and climate data continues to grow a key challenge lies in ensuring that this information is accessible interpretable and actionable for decision-makers WFP staff in country and regional offices and partners across the humanitarian sector. This placement will explore innovative approaches to bridge this gap and assess how advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) and emerging technologies such as Model Context Protocols (MCPs) can be harnessed to maximize the reach and impact of the Humanitarian Data Cube and its underlying datasets.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Explore LLM-based interaction models for querying and interpreting EO and climate data stored in the HDC for example enabling users to ask natural-language questions and receive analytical outputs.
Investigate the integration of Model Context Protocols (MCPs) to connect language models with structured data APIs and processing services ensuring secure contextaware execution of analytical tasks.
Prototype an AI/LLM-based system or workflow that demonstrates how WFP staff can access and interpret climate or EO information without specialist technical knowledge.
Develop implementation recommendations for integrating such AI/LLM-assisted interfaces into WFPs geospatial operational environment. Liaise with the relevant staff within VAM Global HQ to assess user requirements for potential solutions / applications
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT
- Understanding and assessing the current state of the Geospatial infrastructure the data it produces and provides and the way the data are accessed by and served to users and applications
- Propose application of AI/LLM supported workflows & tools for applications within the geospatial infrastructure and the wider activities of the Geospatial & Intelligence unit and WFP.
- Design and implement a prototype of an AI powered solution for improving the data access to geospatial data or to improve / optimize geospatial activities within the unit
- Create comprehensive hand-over documentation and recommendations to ensure this work can be continued after the fellowship.
Education: Masters and PhD students or graduates researchers or professors in Geomatics Software Engineering Computer Science or related fields
Experience: Advanced academic knowledge or technical experience in application of AI tools for data processing tasks and other related fields to the assignment
Knowledge & Skills Experience with AI & LLMs:
LangChain MCP RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) for applicable for EO data discovery and summarization is a requirement
Experience with Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS (S3 Lambda ECS/EKS) serverless architectures Familiarity with Geospatial & EO Data: STAC xarray Dask Open Data Cube rasterio geopandas is an asset Strong communication facilitation and interpersonal skills.
Languages: Fluency in English (Level C). Intermediate knowledge of any other official UN language (French Spanish Arabic Chinese Russian or Portuguese) is an asset. (Please specify here additional requirements at the duty station)
