Job Summary

The College of Fine Arts invites applications and nominations for an accomplished artist and arts pedagogue to join the faculty. We seek a tenure-track faculty member whose creative practice adopts artificial intelligence technologies to produce artistic objects and/or environments. Area of creative practice is open to any art form in the visual and performing arts on offer in the college (studio art theatre dance music and/or design). We are especially interested in artists with substantial media integration into object-based installations or live performance settings (e.g. immersive and projection technologies; intermedia performance; installation art; large data informed art). An ability to think and practice broadly across art genres while sustaining a focused practice of national impact is key to the success of this position.

This position is part of a broader effort at The University of Texas at Austin to advance knowledge and practical integration of artificial intelligence technologies across the campus and a college-level effort to address the significant ways artificial intelligence is transforming artistic practice and research about the arts and design fields. The ideal candidate will impart training and mentorship in their area of creative practice while offering broader technical training to artists and designers across the college and the university on the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for art making. Integration of appropriate historical critical and ethical perspectives on artificial intelligence will be crucial to the successful integration of technology to the creative fields.

The selected candidate will assume a tenure-track line position in one of four departmental units in the college (Art and Art History; Design; Theatre and Dance; or the Butler School of Music) but will be charged with developing curricula of service to the entire college. Candidates should also expect to collaborate with colleagues in the Moody College of Communication and the School of Architecture while inhabiting an arts-specific home in the College of Fine Arts. This position requires relocation to Austin TX. Salary is commensurate with experience. The start date is August 2026.

The College of Fine Arts has approximately 300 faculty 1600 undergraduate 200 masters and 180 doctoral students. The college offers BA BFA BM BS MA MM MFA DMA and PHD degrees in a variety of practice-based and scholarly disciplines as well as an Artists Diploma and K-12 teaching certification. The college strives to educate the next generation of creative leaders and endeavors to generate new knowledge of benefit to society. The college fosters is an expansive understanding of creativity as not only being crucial to traditional artistic practices but also to innovation in science health business and beyond. COFA champions and preserves many artistic traditions and repertoires while also re-imagining them and welcoming new ones.

The University of Texas at Austin is a flagship public land grant tier-one research institution situated in Austin Texas a dynamic metropolitan area with a growing economy ample outdoor recreation many cultural advantages through its numerous arts organizations and is home to a very active and creative arts and design scene.



Candidates are expected to hold a terminal degree in their respective discipline (e.g. MFA PhD DMA) from an accredited institution. The candidate will also show a record of performance or exhibition demonstrating viability towards nationally or internationally significant contributions to their field. Demonstrated proficiency in technology integration into arts practice and pedagogy and evidence of leading successful collaborative efforts in the arts will be key. Prior experience and demonstrated proficiency in teaching and mentoring students at graduate and undergraduate levels are preferred.
