CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use STOP paddles a whistle hand gestures and voice commands.
- Monitor vehicular and pedestrian flow
- Provide special assistance to those with mobility aids and children as well as those that are unaware of crosswalk protocols.
- Wear assigned gear and use a 2-way radio to maintain communication with the team.
- Be punctual for all assigned shifts. If this is not something you can commit to doing please DO NOT apply.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Context: Requires continuous outdoor activity in a marine climate including rain wind and variable temperatures.
- Mobility and Reflexes: Requires rapid movement response to changing traffic and emergency situations.
- Standing and Walking: Must be able to walk 1-3 miles/day and stand for 4-8 hours depending on shift.
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to frequently lift and transport up to 35 lbs. (e.g. safety cones signage).
- Vision and Hearing: Must possess sufficient visual and auditory acuity to assess traffic flow and quickly respond to environmental cues verbal input from pedestrians and drivers and rapidly changing conditions.
- Verbal Communication and Signaling: Requires the ability to project clear authoritative voice commands and effectively use a whistle over ambient noise to safely manage pedestrian and vehicle flow.
- Cognitive and Emotional Stamina: Must remain calm attentive and decisive under stress or confrontation.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum Age: 18 years old
- Prior experience helpful in Tour Operations Security Hospitality Transportation or Public Safety.
- Fluency in English is required; ability to speak other languages at any level is considered to be a plus.
- Must have access to a personal mobile phone for text messaging (daily schedule reminders etc).
- Must have a clean driving record (no DUIs or DWIs) as well as pass a background check professional references and pass a pre-employment drug screening illegal substances in Alaska.
COMPENSATION
Successful candidates can expect competitive pay ($24/hour DOE) paid training staff development attendance bonuses spot awards and a chance to make a difference in Juneau! Additionally all Juneau Welcome Guards will be provided with access to the Alaska Department of Transportations Public Facilities Flagger Training Class before beginning their initial shifts. Completion is required before starting work to ensure staff are well-versed in all required safety measures and procedural protocols.
