Job Title: Dean of Instruction - Middle School
Reports to: Principal

Primary Purpose:
Assist the school principal by leading in the development implementation evaluation and/or review of instructional and innovative programs for the campus. Assists in the supervision and implementation of district instructional programs and initiatives while maintaining congruency between all academic activities. Serves as a campus appraiser for instructional staff and assists in identifying professional development needs and the development of long-range professional development plans. Works with instructional staff to develop and implement effective intervention plans for students demonstrating a need. Helps to maintain a safe positive and orderly learning environment for staff and students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Masters degree
Hold a valid Administrative Certificate Texas Mid-Management Principal or other appropriate Texas certificate
Certified appraiser for current district appraisal system
Teacher Certification in a subject area and grade level appropriate to the campus type
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Thorough knowledge of principles and best practices of current school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
Thorough knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices TEKS State testing programs public school administration and organization.
Thorough knowledge of school-related operations e.g. facility maintenance student transportation and food services.
Ability to plan organizes and coordinates teaching support services student services student activities and school/community relations programs.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff other administrators and the public.
Ability to multi-task and effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Experience:
Three years of experience as a classroom teacher required.
Campus administrative or district level experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Management
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the instructional program.
- Model best practice instructional strategies.
- Conduct walkthroughs and lead instructional rounds on campus in an effort to improve instructional practices of all teachers.
- Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs through the use of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) data analysis and data-driven instruction.
- Lead the Campus Instructional Leaders (CIL) as a method to strengthen/improve tier 1 core instruction.
- Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
- Provide leadership for the campus testing program
- Promote the appropriate use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
- Promote a positive school/organizational climate.
- Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
School/Organizational Improvement
- Assume a leadership role in all campus administrative responsibilities.
- Provide leadership in the development of campus improvement plans budgets master schedule and other similar projects.
- Administer all policies and procedures of both the school and the District
Personnel Management
- Observe employee performance record observations and conduct evaluation conferences. Serve as second appraiser for designated teacher appraisal system.
- Assist principal in interviewing selecting and orienting new staff.
- Implement effective personnel management strategies to include conducting meaningful staff evaluations and employing documentation practices that encourage professional growth.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
- Supervise operations in principals absence.
- Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules.
- Supervise reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.
- Work with department heads and faculty to compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
- Requisition supplies textbooks and equipment; check inventory; maintain records; and verify receipts for materials.
- Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.
- Coordinate transportation custodial cafeteria and other support services.
- Comply with federal and state laws State Board of Education rules and board policy.
Student Management
- Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
- Help to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
- Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
- Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents students and teachers.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
- Model a commitment of professional growth and continuous improvement.
School/Community Relations
- Communicate effectively with students staff other administrators parents and community.
- Articulate the schools mission to community and solicit its support.
- Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
- Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with school principal. Supervise teachers custodians paraprofessionals clerical personnel and others as assigned.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Frequent standing stooping bending pulling and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks media equipment desks and other classroom equipment. Occasional district-wide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
