SUMMER STUDENT POSITION
Reporting to the Emergency Program Coordinator the FireSmart Program Worker (summer student) supports the delivery of FireSmart activities within Williams Lake First Nation. This position assists with public education and basic property assessments. Community outreach data collection and light fieldwork related to wildfire prevention and mitigation. This role is intended a s a learning and support position providing hands on experience in wildfire risk reduction emergency management and community engagement while working closely with experienced FireSmart and emergency management staff.
Employment Type
Term Full-Time (May to August).
Education Required
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from Grade 11 Grade 12 or post-secondary education (required).
Experience Required
- Interest or coursework in emergency management forestry environmental science or related fields is an asset.
- Previous community outdoor or summer work experience is an asset.
Overtime Status
Non-exempt.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the FireSmart Technician in delivering FireSmart activities within the community.
- Participate in community outreach education events and FireSmart awareness activities.
- Assist with organizing setting up and attending public events workshops and community meetings.
- Aids with basic fuel management activities such as:
- Clearing light brush and debris
- Assisting with yard clean-up days
- Supporting chipping or disposal coordination
- Follow all safety procedures and direction provided by supervisors.
- Assists with internal external and public communications related to FireSmart.
- All people employed by the Williams Lake First Nation will be required to assist the organization in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties.
- Supports the mission vision and values of Williams Lake First.
- Contributes to the WLFNs ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge
- Knowledge of Williams Lake First Nation community traditions teachings culture protocols and
- Knowledge of fire and public safety education fire service operation and emergency
- Knowledge of contemporary Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fuels management
- Proficient use of information technologies (computers mobile devices etc) including Microsoft Office Suite presentation development tools online education programs and social media channels.
Skills and Abilities
- Enthusiastic about wildfire prevention and mitigation and community
- Strong communication skills and willingness to engage with the
- Ability to work well as part of a team and take directions from
- Interest in emergency management forestry firefighting or environmental
- Knowledge of Microsoft office suite of programs (Work Excel PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of social media

- Experience volunteering or working in community-based
- Comfortable with outdoor physical activities such as light manual labor (e.g. clearing brush moving debris).
- Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and has an understanding of Indigenous
