Position Purpose:
This position provides grounds and facility maintenance for Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational High School. This position is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control; performs all other related work as required.
Essential Functions:

Site Grounds Maintenance:
- Perform lawn maintenance including all aspects of irrigation fertilization pest control and cutting. Collect soil samples for analysis and interpret results for corrective treatment.
- Perform all arboriculture activities including pruning tree removal and replacement and pest treatments (within prescribed Massachusetts guidelines).
- Coordinate a program for maintaining artificial turf and track assets with the manufacturers prescribed maintenance plan with other grounds personnel.
- Assist with the development and administration of an automated site maintenance plan for all facility grounds-related needs.
- Ensure that all machinery and irrigation equipment are maintained at prescribed intervals.
- Establish and maintain an inventory of necessary spare equipment.
- Maintain school vehicles for the purpose of ensuring reliability and safe operations.
- Administer and qualify all in-house grounds-related support staff and oversee the activities of substitutes students and outside contractors.
- Procure and qualify all outside contractor support and activities pertaining to ground-related construction within chapter 30-B guidelines.
- Provide and manage grounds support for remote athletic fields within the City of New Bedford. Provide proper communications with outside athletic field management.
- Prepare reports for the purpose of documenting pesticide application as required by state and federal regulating agencies.
- Maintain up-to-date SDS documents for all ground-related chemicals including fertilizers. Ensure that they are readily accessible for all staff.
Snow and Ice Removal:
- Coordinate and oversee in-house staff resources and outside contractors for all aspects of snow and ice removal activities on a timely basis for the entire site ensuring public safety at all times.
- Qualify contractor staff and equipment capability for snow removal. Act as a direct liaison to ensure that contractors are responding appropriately to weather forecasts and school needs.
- Establish and maintain an inventory of snow removal chemicals and equipment.
General Facilities:
- May advise the Facility Director with respect to all grounds related needs including athletic field maintenance modifications pavement pavers concrete fencing and other grounds related construction activities.
- Support the athletic director with related field maintenance and field equipment needs on a timely basis.
- Provide custodial support when required by the Facility Director or designee.
- Maintain building facility equipment including school facility equipment cafeteria and shop equipment.
- Perform other facility related tasks as requested by the Facility Director.
- Recommend acquisition of new equipment and disposal of obsolete or non-useable grounds equipment.
- Maintain IPM compliance with documentation and committee activities.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education Training and Experience:
High school graduate; or GED.
Knowledge Ability and Skill:
Minimum 5 years experience in a grounds maintenance environment. Working knowledge of automated irrigation. Basis experience in facility maintenance work. Ability to understand and comply with verbal instructions. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with other employees and supervisors.
License: Acquire Massachusetts hydraulics/hoisting license certifications in pesticides chemical fertilizers or ability to acquire licenses during 1st year of employment.

Supervision Scope: Performs routine duties that are clearly defined by the protocol and standard operating procedures. This role requires basic knowledge of departmental operations.
Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Director Facilities or his designee.

Job Environment:
- Considerable physical activity. Requires physical work; heavy lifting pushing or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
- The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures dirt dust fumes smoke unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
