Job Summary

Reports to: Campus Principal Fine Arts Director and Head Band Director

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Part-Time (.5)

Compensation Plan: Teacher Hiring Schedule

Minimum Salary: Teacher Hiring Schedule

Duty Days: 187 days per year

Primary Purpose:

Provides color guard instruction to students in the bands color guard program. Responsible for managing all aspects of the schools color guard under the leadership of the head band director. Responsible for contributing to the educational program as a whole and to the growth of each student. Provides opportunities for students to participate in a high-level challenging curriculum in the areas of responsibility.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Bachelors degree required from an accredited university
  • Texas teacher certification in dance required
  • Texas teacher certification in PE and dance preferred

Experience

  • Color guard performance experience required. Color guard teaching experience preferred. Participation in WGI DCI or North Texas Color Guard Association preferred

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • General knowledge of color guard teaching techniques and procedures
  • Willingness to execute written employment contract with the Denton ISD
  • Knowledge of overall operation of band color guard program
  • Ability to teach color guard techniques (including choreography flag sabre and rifle) for band field shows and indoor color guard shows
  • Knowledge of policies governing color guard in UIL WGI and North Texas Color Guard Association
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Strong communication public relations and interpersonal skills

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Establishes performance criteria for competition and evaluates students color guard abilities initially and on a regular basis.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student color guard group involved.
  • Manages and supervises color guard activities contests and practice sessions that promote individual growth in skills teamwork and appropriate performance etiquette.
  • Keeps informed of and ensure compliance with all DISD/UIL/WGI/NTCA rules and guidelines.
  • Recruits and retains student membership in the color guard program as well as monitors and enforces student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.
  • Works with Head Band Director and Fine Arts Director in scheduling competitions and coordinating arrangements.
  • Cooperates with other members of the school staff in planning and implementing instructional goals and objectives for the overall educational development of student performances.
  • Assists in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
  • Compiles maintains and files all reports records inventory and additional required data using Charms music management system and other required documents.
  • Complies with policies established by federal and state laws State Board of Education rules and the local board policy in area of music.
  • Travels with color guard students and supervises group during competitions in assigned events.
  • Follows all the rules regulations and policies of Denton ISD and follows directives from superiors.
  • Maintains proper and appropriate discipline among students during band and color guard contests practice sessions and while on trips off school property.
  • Encourages by example and through instruction sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of color guard participation.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Articulates the districts mission and goals in the area of band and color guard to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrates awareness of district-community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.
  • Demonstrates the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
  • Develops professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
  • Assesses and responds to needs related to job responsibilities.
  • Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the color guard program and implement changes based on the findings.

Other Related Duties:

  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participates in professional development faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools and Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; automated external defibrillator (AED)

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking modeling dancing including tap jazz ballet hip hop and various styles.

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise; frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours

The appointment of this position will be recommended to the Board of Trustees by the Superintendent of Schools on the basis of the applicants training experience and expertise. The Board of Trustees must give final approval.
