Job Summary
The Refrigeration Engineer will design install maintain and optimize refrigeration systems used in our solar-powered cold chain infrastructure solutions including cold rooms mobile cooling vans and freezer units. The role involves ensuring efficient system performance maintaining temperature standards (down to -35C) and supporting the expansion of Eja-Ices sustainable cold chain solutions.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Engineering
- Design refrigeration systems for solar-powered cold rooms freezers and refrigerated vehicles.
- Calculate cooling loads and specify appropriate compressors condensers evaporators and refrigerants.
- Work closely with the electrical engineering team to integrate refrigeration systems with solar PV and battery storage systems.
Installation & Commissioning
- Supervise installation of refrigeration units at cold storage sites and on mobile cooling vans.
- Conduct system testing commissioning and performance validation.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration systems.
- Diagnose and repair faults in compressors expansion valves thermostats and refrigeration circuits.
- Maintain optimal system efficiency and reduce downtime.
Temperature & Quality Monitoring
- Ensure cold chain integrity with accurate temperature monitoring.
- Implement data logging systems for cold rooms and mobile refrigeration units.
- Support digital monitoring tools used in Eja-Ices smart cold chain systems.
Operational Support
- Train technicians and cold room operators on refrigeration best practices.
- Support the deployment of solar-powered cooling vans and tricycles.
- Provide technical input for scaling cold chain infrastructure across West and East Africa.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree or Higher National Diploma in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineering
- Energy Engineering
- 5-10 years experience in:
- Industrial refrigeration
- Cold rooms or cold chain infrastructure
- Refrigeration systems for food or pharmaceutical storage
Technical Skills
- Refrigerant systems (R134a R404A R290 CO₂ preferred)
- Compressor systems (scroll reciprocating inverter compressors)
- Cooling load calculations
- Cold room design and insulation systems
- Refrigeration control systems and thermostats
- Integration of refrigeration with solar PV and battery storage
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with solar-powered refrigeration systems.
- Experience with cold chain logistics for fisheries food distribution or healthcare.
- Knowledge of air/ gas leakage management
- Knowledge of insulation materials / systems and air tightness
Key Competencies
