Database Engineer
8x8 is seeking a Database Engineer to join our engineering team responsible for managing and optimizing database infrastructure across on-premises AWS and OCI environments. This is a hands-on role requiring deep expertise in relational database systems replication architectures performance tuning and automation.
You will partner with development and infrastructure teams to ensure database platforms deliver the highest levels of availability performance and data integrity across a globally distributed environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented thrives under pressure and is passionate about database reliability at scale.
Responsibilities
Manage and optimize Oracle 11g/19c RAC MySQL 5.7/8 and PostgreSQL database systems and related infrastructure across on-premises AWS and OCI cloud environments.
Plan and execute database upgrades - Oracle and MySQL - ensuring minimal downtime across all environments.
Perform advanced database troubleshooting query performance tuning and issue resolution across Oracle MySQL PostgreSQL HAProxy and Keepalived.
Design implement and maintain database replication topologies including master-slave and master-master configurations.
Develop and maintain automation for database operations using Linux shell scripting Python Terraform and Ansible.
Manage backup and recovery operations using RMAN mysqldump pgdump and other tools ensuring RPO/RTO targets are met.
Implement and maintain database monitoring alerting and dashboards using Grafana CloudWatch or equivalent platforms.
Collaborate with application development teams on schema design query optimization and capacity planning.
Participate in on-call rotations as a escalation point for critical database incidents.
Document database architectures runbooks and operational procedures.
Participate in on-call rotations to address critical database incidents promptly.
Required Skills & Experience
3 years of hands-on experience as a Database Engineer or DBA in production environments.
Strong expertise in Oracle 11g/19c RAC administration including RMAN backup/restore patching and query optimization.
Solid experience with MySQL 5.7/8 administration replication strategies (master-slave master-master) and performance tuning.
Working knowledge of PostgreSQL administration and tooling (pgdump replication vacuuming).
Proficiency in Linux systems administration (Ubuntu/RHEL-based) and shell scripting.
Experience with automation and infrastructure-as-code tools: Python Terraform Ansible.
Familiarity with high-availability components: HAProxy Keepalived or equivalent load balancing and failover solutions.
Experience with Git-based workflows and CI/CD practices for database change management.
Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills ability to diagnose and resolve complex database issues under pressure.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across time zones in a distributed team.
Nice to Have
Experience with AWS database services (RDS Aurora) and OCI database offerings.
Exposure to MSSQL Server administration.
Experience setting up Grafana monitoring dashboards alerting rules and integration with database metrics.
Familiarity with database migration strategies across cloud providers and on-premises
