APS Generation Non-Nuclear Gas & Oil Plants are seeking qualified individuals for the position ofElectrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Apprentice.

TheE&I Apprenticeship Programdevelops entry-level or semi-skilled workers into proficient multi-skilled journeymen through structuredon-the-job training combined with technical and theoretical instruction. Apprentices support the safe reliable and cost-effective production of electric energy while developing the skills of the E&I craft.

Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) techniciansinstallmaintain troubleshoot and repair electrical power systems control systems and instrumentation used to monitor andoperateindustrial equipment and processes in a power plant environment. Work includes motors switchgear control circuits sensors transmitters programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and distributed control systems (DCS). E&I technicians ensure equipmentoperatessafely and reliably throughtesting calibration diagnostics and preventive maintenance.

Previouseducation or experience inprocess control instrumentation installation calibration and repair and/orelectrical construction and repair is preferred. Experience inpower plant or industrial plant operations and maintenanceis also beneficial.

During the apprenticeship candidates will develop skills inelectrical systems instrumentation calibration process control systems troubleshooting and industrial maintenance practices used in power generation facilities.

MinimumRequirements:

Must be18 years of age or older
High school diploma or GED(copy required)
Valid drivers license
Completion ofCollege Algebra or higherwith a grade ofC or better(transcripts or qualifying placement test required)
Currently enrolled in or have completedone semester of AC Electrical Theory or equivalentwith a grade ofC or better(transcripts or equivalent documentation required).
Candidates submitting proof of current enrollment must provide documentation of successful completion with a grade of C or better by April 6 2026
Demonstratedaptitude attitude and adaptabilitynecessary for the E&I craft
Must be able to safely work withaerial equipment with a weight limit of 300lbs

Selection Process:

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications willparticipatein the following selection process:

Pass theMaintenance Selection System (MASS) aptitude exam
Successfully complete awritten technical evaluation
Successfully complete aphysical field evaluation
Successfully complete apanel interview

Candidates who have not previously taken theMASS exam or who are eligible to retest will be invited to complete the exam as part of the selection process.

Selected candidates willparticipatein theGeneration Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Apprentice Program which is centrally administered byGeneration Training.

At the time of offer selected candidates will be assigned ahome-base location for the duration of the apprenticeship which may include:

Redhawk Power Plant Arlington AZ
Ocotillo Power Plant Tempe AZ
Sundance Power Plant Coolidge AZ

Apprentices will spend theirfirst six months in classroom training at the Ocotillo Service Center.

Following initial training and through the completion of the apprenticeship apprentices will follow a structured rotation schedule consisting oftwo months at their assigned home-base plant and one month at a designated rotation plant each quarter.

Home-baseassignments and training rotations aredeterminedbased onfleet workforce needs generation demand forecasts and apprenticeship program structure. Rotation assignments may change during the apprenticeship as part of the training program.

Finaljourneyman placement upon completion of the apprenticeshipwill bedeterminedbased onAPS Generation workforce needs at the time of program completionand may differ from the apprentices home-baselocation or training rotation locations.

GenerationTrainingmaintainsprogram oversight and authority to coordinate training rotations home-baseassignments and program structure adjustments necessary to support fleet training and workforce developmentobjectives.

Additional Requirements for Selected Candidates:

Work under theterms and conditions of the Apprenticeship Standard Agreement
This apprenticeship program isapproximately 3.5 4 years in duration
Written and practical assessments may be administered to determinepotential for advanced standingin the program
Starting wage may varyif advanced standing is granted
Upon successful completion of the program apprentices will be awarded anE&I Journeyman position consistent with workforce needs and program placement outcomes
Apprentices must be able to supporthome-base assignments and training rotations across APS Generation facilities
Shift work may be required including12-hour rotating shifts depending on plant assignment
Job rotation between crews and locations is requiredas part of the apprenticeship training progression
Reasonable and necessary overtime may be required

Testing Information

Tests are only administered to referred candidates. More information about our tests and the testing process can be found HERE.

Selected candidates who have met the minimum qualifications will be subject to the following requirements:

  • Pass a written aptitude exam - Maintenance Selection System Test (MASS).

    • Selected candidates that have not already completed the MASS test or are eligible to retest will be invited to take the MASS test as part of the selection process

  • Must successfully pass a written evaluation.

  • Must successfully pass a physical field evaluation.

  • Must successfully complete a panel interview.
