DEFINITION
Under direction of a school principal oversee and perform custodial and minor maintenance work at assigned facility; perform varied duties in assisting pupils teachers or other users of facility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in the Site Custodian classification work during the day and oversee and perform custodial and minor maintenance duties independently and perform varied duties in assisting pupils teachers and other users of assigned school facility. Incumbents in the Custodian I classification perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties during an evening shift as part of a crew at assigned crew. Incumbents in the Custodian II classification perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties including cleaning carpeted areas. They work as a part of a custodial crew at assigned schools during later evening hours to assist those using school facilities and to assure security of facilities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect buildings and grounds for vandalism and safety hazards.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports related to custodial operations including vandalism reports.
- Check heating and other mechanical equipment for proper operation and perform or arrange for service or maintenance.
- Participate in keeping classrooms restrooms shower rooms and halls in a clean and orderly condition.
- Dust wax and polish furniture and woodwork.
- Distribute empty and clean trash cans.
- Hose scrub and sweep lunch areas; water lawns and shrubs as needed.
- Sweep and blow sidewalks paved areas and parking lots.
- Clean drinking fountains; replace light bulbs.
- Arrange furniture and equipment for special meetings.
- Requisition stock and inventory needed supplies and materials.
- Performs minor repairs of buildings furniture and equipment and report needs for major repairs.
13. Assembles adjusts and engraves furniture.
14. Perform varied duties in assisting and serving pupils teachers and other users of
school facilities.
- Lead work crews in large cleaning projects as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF
1. Methods materials and equipment used in custodial work.
- Routine operation and maintenance of boilers motors pumps and related mechanical equipment.
- Principles of organizing custodial services at assigned site including training personnel.
- Basic safety practices related to custodial activities.
ABILITY TO
- Oversee and perform custodial and minor maintenance duties at assigned facility.
- Perform varied duties in assisting pupils teachers and other users of facility.
- Plan and carry out a systematic building cleaning and maintenance schedule.
- Work independently with little direction.
- Keep basic records and make reports.
- Provide input in the evaluation of custodial personnel assigned to site as requested.
- Understand carry out and give oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years responsible experience in custodial work.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to lifting and moving heavy objects climbing ladders and contact with cleaning agents and chemicals.
