Job Summary

Communication Advisor (CA) in the Writing Centre and Speaking Studio at the Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES)(Ref.: 534621)(to commence from August 3 2026 for one year)

The University of Hong Kong promotes an international experience for students and its medium of instruction is English. The Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES) mission is to improve the English academic literacy skills of students at The University of Hong Kong and CAES Communication Support Services (CSS) supports this mission with one-to-one consultations and group workshops through the Speaking Studio and Writing Centre and through in-course support for Communication Intensive Courses. Communication Advisor (CA) posts have been created to support the development of students communication skills through the Writing Centre and Speaking Studio.

Applicants must have a university degree with native-speaker competence in English a passion for communication and enthusiasm for helping others. Experience in teaching or tutoring of communication skills and a TEFL certificate or similar qualification are preferred although exceptional applicants without experience and/or a TEFL certificate will be considered. Preference will be given to recent graduates who have achieved personal excellence in and are keen to help others with written spoken and digital media communication. They should demonstrate an ability to work well in teams as well as an ability to complete projects independently.

This is a full-time position which involves between 15-20 contact hours of one-to-one advising and facilitation of discussion and workshop activities plus a further allocation of hours for development of learning materials and promotional media as well as support of CSS part-time peer consultants and completion of administrative tasks (minimum of 39 hours per week in total).Communication Advisors also have the opportunity to do project work in areas such as website upkeep and collaboration with HKU professors to tailor support services to their students needs.

Communication Advisors will be trained to deliver support services in the CSS Writing Centre Speaking Studio and Communication Intensive Course initiative. Communication Advisors work closely with each other CSS Coordinators and part-time peer consultants and they are mentored by CAES staff. A range of professional development activities within CAES and across the university are available to Communication Advisors.

The monthly salary is HK$24755 in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. A travel subsidy of up to HK$10000 (single or return) may be provided as applicable on completion of the one-year contract. There are no housing benefits for this post. Start date is August 3 2026.
