Job Description
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Medical-Surgical / Telemetry provides direct patient care to adult medical patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN is responsible for monitoring patient conditions administering medications assisting with treatments and supporting the interdisciplinary care team to ensure safe and effective patient care. This role requires experience in acute care settings and the ability to manage patient assignments while collaborating with RNs and physicians.
Key Responsibilities
Provide direct nursing care to patients in a medical-surgical telemetry unit.
Monitor and document vital signs pain levels and changes in patient conditions.
Administer medications via oral IM SQ NG/G-tube ear and eye routes as prescribed.
Assist with IV therapy using infusion pumps and perform blood glucose monitoring.
Provide oxygen therapy through nasal cannula and monitor respiratory status.
Perform basic wound care including simple dressings and management of JP or Hemovac drains.
Assist with Foley catheter insertion and urinary specimen collection.
Monitor intake and output and report abnormalities to the RN or physician.
Perform telemetry monitoring and assist with 12-lead EKG procedures.
Support feeding tube management and assist patients with hygiene bathing and oral care.
Implement isolation precautions and ensure compliance with infection control protocols.
Communicate patient status changes promptly to the RN or physician.
Required Qualifications
Active New York State LPN license (single-state license required; NY is not a compact state).
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
Minimum recent acute care experience within the last 2 years.
Ability to manage own patient assignment with RN support.
Experience in medical-surgical and telemetry patient care.
Required Clinical Skills
Vital sign monitoring and pain assessment
Intake and output monitoring
Telemetry monitoring and 12-lead EKG
Medication administration (oral IM SQ NG/G-tube)
IV therapy and infusion pump management
Blood glucose monitoring
