Job Summary

Description

Correctly processes and distributes specimens

  • Performs collection verification according to procedure
  • Correlates specimens with all appropriate requests and delivers to correct areas.
  • Accurately registers patients on lab computer
  • Processes STAT specimens for referral and completes necessary forms
  • Properly processes AFB specimens for referral and completes necessary forms
  • Properly processes PKU specimens for referral and completes necessary forms
  • Properly processes Rubella & other specimens for State referral and completes necessary forms
  • Accurately orders testing during computer down time

Properly collects venipuncture specimens

  • Verifies patient identification prior to collection and labels correctly
  • Knows type specimen prior to collection
  • Performs invasive procedures as needed to collect specimens.
  • Collects pediatric using appropriate supplies with minimum trauma
  • Successfully collects PKU (goal <1% unsatisfactory)
  • Collects Blood Bank specimens according to procedure
  • Collects Blood cultures using aseptic technique.
  • Properly collects Trough & Peaks and completes form
  • Properly collects T helper/Quant HIV
  • Collects STAT and timed requests within 15 minutes of specified time when required.
  • Monitors Collection Pending Log or Undelivered Collection list.

Receives and interprets physician orders

  • Properly processes requests in a timely manner
  • Ensures proper crediting charging and cancellation of patient requisitions.
  • Properly interprets ancillary forms and orders appropriate tests.

Strives to improve the overall effectiveness of the department

  • Articulates and demonstrates a professional image daily to patients visitors and other staff
  • Demonstrates flexibility in working hours shift schedules in order to meet staffing requirements
  • Interacts with appropriate team members to relay information regarding patient test results

  • Follows operational directives from Specimen Processing Coordinator and Laboratory Leadership Team.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience/Certifications:

Entry Level Position. One year of phlebotomy experience is preferred. Completion of an approved phlebotomy program is desired. Computer and clerical experience is desirable. The Specimen Processing Technician position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patents assigned.
