Nursing Practice Leader Medical Surgical Services
Job Summary
University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Practice Leader to collaborate with administrators nursing staff and licensed independent practitioners (LIP) to provide expertise related to Medical Surgical Nursing.
Position Summary:
The Nursing Practice Leader functions as a change agent for the division patient population by incorporating the roles of clinical specialist educator consultant practitioner researcher and administrator as indicated to support and enhance patient care. Provide leadership and supervision for the division by coordinating staff orientation and annual competencies. Collaborates with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care. Serves in a consultative resource capacity to staff by providing expert knowledge and role modeling behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Provide Leadership and Direct Care for Specialized Patient Population
o Assist nurse managers in leading nursing practice and patient care on the divisional units.
o Serve as an expert resource on medical/surgical oncology clinical practice and quality initiatives.
o Ensures that all divisional policies procedures and guidelines are evidence-based and are reviewed/revised on a regular basis and compliant with national standards.
o Provides leadership in implementing strategies to influence quality and safety initiatives.
o Reviews Riskonnect reports from the division and provides consultation on improving quality and safety.
Specialized Services for Nursing Care
o Translate findings from research into clinical practice and assist units with implementing evidence-based practice strategies.
o Reviews national standards regarding clinical care and uses relevant nursing literature to improve clinical practice. Helps to investigate nursing care challenges/issues on the divisional units.
Provide Education
o Provide expert specialty-level education to healthcare staff patients students or residents.
o Communicate detailed complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences.
o Assists in providing orientation classes for new RNs and nursing assistants coming to the divisional units.
o Assists in the development and execution of annual competency sessions for the divisional nursing staff.
o Acts as a facilitator for nurse residency groups and nurses participating in the experienced nurse fellowship program.
o Assures compliance with internal policies and external regulations for safe and effective care delivery and health profession education.
o Leads the Joint Commission preparedness and compliance efforts in the division working with appropriate nursing leaders.
o Participates in tracers on the divisional units and assists with the completion of AMP tracers.
o Provides consultation and mentoring to the divisional units to assure preparedness for Joint Commission and other regulatory visits.
o Serves on the CLABSI and CAUTI shared governance groups.

Education or Equivalency Required:
Masters degree in Nursing required. If Masters/Doctorate Degree is in related field other than nursing specialty a Baccalaureate of Science or Arts Degree in Nursing is required
Required License/Certification:
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
Required Qualifications:
- 3 years of clinical nursing experience including a minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role in a similar setting
- Demonstrates skills for leading change and implementation of evidence-based practice
- Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication
- Demonstrates skills in leadership/management roles
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills
Proficient in computer software applications
Desirable Qualifications:
- Member/involvement in professional organizations
Professional certification in relevant nursing or clinical area is highly desired
