Mater Hospital Springfield is seeking those looking to work full time or part time as an Afterhours Lead - Critical Care Medical Officer within our Intensive Care Team for 12 months. Based at our Springfield campus these roles will be part of a landmark moment in Queensland healthcare at Mater Hospital Springfield. This state-of-the-art facility will meet the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region. With a mix of public and private beds across ICU maternity emergency and medical surgical services its set to care for over 200000 patients annually.

Mater Hospital Springfield is a modern nine storey facility featuring an ED ICU and General Surgical Medical Paediatric and Maternity -located with Mater Private Hospital Springfield the campus will provide a combined 233 inpatient beds.

The new 9-bed ICU will deliver full vital organ support including mechanical and noninvasive ventilation inotropic/vasopressor therapy and renal replacement therapy for critically ill patients and those undergoing major elective and emergency procedures.

Mater Intensive Care Services operate integrated public and private ICUs across our South Brisbane campus (soon to expand to three units with Springfield). Our experienced supportive team cares for complex surgical neurosurgical medical obstetric and oncology/haematology patients. The existing South Brisbane ICUs are accredited by CICM for (C12) advanced training and neurosurgical critical care training there is a plan for Mater Springfield ICU to attain advanced training accreditation in 12 to 24 months after opening.

What youll be doing

Specific role expectations

• This role is afterhours on weekdays (8 pm to 8.40 am) and 24 hours on weekends (8 am to 8.40 pm day shift and 8 pm to 8.40 am night shift)
• The primary responsibility of the MHS AHL-CCMO is to provide medical leadership and procedural expertise in caring for unwell patients in all inpatient areas of Mater Hospital Springfield afterhours and on weekends
• The MHS AHL-CCMO would work closely with the afterhours Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) the ICU Principal House Officer (PHO) the medical registrar ward call senior house officer (SHO) and the emergency department medical and nursing teams
• Clinical supervision and support are provided by the intensivist on-duty and the Deputy Director of Intensive Care Mater Hospital Springfield
• For individual clinical management the MHS AHL-CCMO will liaise with the senior medical officer (SMO) or visiting medical officer (VMO) whom the patient is admitted under (or their covering SMO/VMO)
• The MHS AHL-CCMO is expected to attend all Medical Emergency Team (MET) calls Code Blue calls and Code Black calls when on shift
• The MHS AHL-CCMO is expected to provide
• Procedural expertise during MET calls (MET calls are led by medical registrar and attended by ICU PHO)
• Leadership and procedural expertise during Code Blue calls (Code Blue is led by AHL CCMO with ICU PHO ED PHO and medical registrar providing assistance)
• Attendance at MET calls and Codes will be remunerated as per the current enterprise agreement for CCMO
• The MHS AHL-CCMO is expected to be the airway proceduralist in MET calls and Codes until the arrival of another advanced airway practitioner
• The MHS AHL-CCMO is expected to supervise the ward call SHO who is rostered till 11 pm to ensure that ward call tasks are attended to. Remaining ward call tasks after 11 pm are the shared duty of MHS AHL-CCMO medical registrar and ICU PHO with the AHL-CCMO in a leading role as per their job title
• The MHS AHL-CCMO is expected to cover the intensive care unit (ICU) in addition to inpatient duties when there is no medical officer in the ICU due to reasons such as PHO providing medical escort for interhospital transfers or unexpected sick leave
• The MHS AHL-CCMO must ensure clear and effective communication with staff patients and their relatives
• The MHS AHL-CCMO must ensure appropriate documentation is placed on the patient clinical record
• The MHS AHL-CCMO must comply with and utilise procedures policies regulations and standards which impact upon the position including completion of corporate required learning adherence to clinical guidelines work instructions human resource management requirements and practices such as workplace health and safety

About you

Qualifications skill-based certifications and desired experience

• Basic medical degree: MBBS MD or equivalent
• Basic life support (BLS) and Advanced life support (ALS) mandatory
• Completion of the BASIC (Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care) course is desirable
• Paediatric life support (PLS) certification is desirable
• Procedural competency in basic and advanced airway management peripheral and central vascular access the use of inotropes and vasopressors invasive and non-invasive ventilation are required
• Experience in critical care areas such as anaesthesia intensive care emergency medicine and/or retrieval medicine required
• At least 6 months of anaesthesia experience is highly desirable
• Completion of advanced airway workshop desirable
• Ability to lead a team in clinical crises
