What Youll Do
As a System Engineer and Technical Authority for an assigned fire protection system coordinate configuration management activities assess system health and performance and provide overall technical responsibility for system operability and maintenance activities. Applies technical expertise based on system familiarity needed to troubleshoot and resolve system and equipment issues in cooperation with other related disciplines and implements improvement projects.
Interprets and implements compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) mandated fire protection codes and standards. Utilizes an understanding of Conduct of Engineering Conduct of Operations and Conduct of Maintenance for facilities operating within a nuclear safety class regulated environment. Prepares configuration control/design change packages for tasks and evaluates the impact of proposed changes and/or modifications to approved safety authorization basis for facilities. Reviews detailed design packages providing engineering procurement and technical support for corrective work package and improvement project activities. Support activities include fire protection on-call responsibilities for approximately 6-weeks per year.
The Fire Protection Engineer will review and maintain fire pump house fire distribution main fire riser fire alarm fire sprinkler system and fire penetration seal/barrier designs and systems. The engineer will apply National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and related industrial codes and standards in the design and maintenance of these types of systems.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelors of science in engineering/science discipline with a minimum 4 years of relevant experience
- OR a Masters of science in engineering/science discipline with a minimum 2 years of relevant experience

- Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering fire protection engineering or related discipline from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents thru ABET Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA)
- OR a Bachelors degree in science
- A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) is preferred for up to four years post-graduation confirmed by transcript at the time of offer. Beyond four years from graduation relevant experience will supersede GPA in hiring considerations.
- Bachelors degree with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA
- Masters degree with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA
- PhD with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA
- Professional Engineering License (PE)
- Demonstrated technical capabilities leadership and work ethic
- Proven interpersonal experience and ability to work in a project team environment and communicate well with other disciplines customers and stakeholders
- Proven experience in a culture of accountability continuous improvement and operational discipline
- Experience and frequent use and application of technical standards principles theories concepts and techniques
- Understanding of and experience with pumps fluids and hydraulic analysis via commercially-available software
- Understanding of and experience with potable water and plant fire/service water applications
- Experience or willingness to develop capabilities in conduit/cables schedules equipment plans one-line diagrams instrument loop diagrams cabinet assembly drawings and control logic for instrumentation and programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
- Ability to evaluate and provide feedback on new and proposed revisions to technical operating and preventative maintenance procedures design drawings and requirements and facility systems structures and components
- Ablilty to communicate clearly and effectively through the oral and written word including formal presentation skills and technical writing
- Ability to make informed decisions and support those decisions to peers and management
- Ability to manage competing priorities in high-pressure deadline-driven environment
