Position Summary


Program Overview
The Public Administration Intern is a program designed to provide participants with a wide range of experiences and opportunities to learn about municipal operations policy and governance.

The intern will work independently as well in a team. The assignments may span a variety of areas including administration human resources member relations training and events. This position will report to the Strategic Initiatives Manager.

Program Experience
During the internship we expect the intern will:
Perform a variety of entry-level administrative staff duties related to administrative policies processes and programs while learning the fundamental mission structure and operations of the League of Minnesota Cities and municipal government.Example: Intern might research best practices on creating and fostering a diverse workforce in municipal government.

Conduct routine research identify samples assemble and compile data.Example: Intern might gather information about city practices in a topic/area being considered for legislative change.

Applies basic management analysis techniques to help guide decision-making.Example: Intern might assist with researching one aspect of a major project such as the Leagues Health Care or Diversity Initiative.

Performs work related to the analysis of systems and procedures organization and management workflow and distribution and improvements in efficiency.Example: Intern might analyze current hiring practices by city staff to identify better methods for job searches

Draft written documents for both internal use by League staff and for external use by member city officials.Examples might include writing information memos on employment law topics for city officials working on manuals describing safety-related practices or documentation of new processes to increase efficiency of League operations.

Attend and participate in meetings forums work sessions and training seminars. Examples include LMC Annual Conference LMC Board of Directors Meetings Management Team and other League sponsored events.

Contributes to the oversight of a part-time undergraduate intern position. Examples: drafting project plans delegating project tasks providing mentorship and ensuring all work aligns with departmental and organizational goals. Offers the intern exposure to the structure and operations of a membership-based or municipal organization helping them gain insight into careers in public administration.

Makes presentations to other staff member city officials or the Board of Directors in assigned areas as requested. May attend monthly board meetings to further knowledge of the agency and its operations.

Other duties as assigned.

Participant Requirements
  • Planning to enroll (next semester) current student or recent graduate of a masters program in Public Administration Public Policy Urban Studies or related field.
  • Ability to work 20-40 hours per week for the durations of the program. Schedule will be flexible to support degree completion.
  • Ability to travel between work sites and to off-site events provide own transportation.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Discreet and capable to be trusted with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Curious and willing work ethic and a clear desire to learn and develop.

Compensation
This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and will pay $29.07/hour. This internship is also benefit eligible if the minimum 20 hours per week requirement is met.
