Summer Academic Assistant for Upward Bound Program
Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the position of Summer Academic Assistant for the Upward Bound Program. Upward Bound is funded 100% by the U.S. Department of Education.
Position Summary
The Academic Assistant (AA) will provide/assist the Program Coordinator in overseeing classes study hall and tutoring for the Upward Bound participants (local high school students) during the 5-week summer program and help plan and chaperone the end-of-program overnight trip. This is a seasonal position beginning Tuesday May 19th and ending Thursday June 25th with typical hours being 9:00AM-5:00PM Mondays-Wednesdays and 9:00AM-2:00PM Thursdays except for 3 8AM-5PM training/preparation days (May 19th-21st). The Academic Assistant is not required to reside in the residence hall or to assist with the end-of-program overnight trip.
Compensation
$2200 less taxes
Qualifications
Associate degree preferred but will consider current degree-seeking students with at least one year relevant experience
Must have a valid drivers license
Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
Must demonstrate a sensitivity to and strong interest working with educationally and economically disadvantaged students
Prefer a grade point average of 3.0 or above
Prefer a person with background similar to that of target population
Prefer a person with experience tutoring/working with high school students
Primary Responsibilities
Assist Program Coordinator and Summerfest Instructors with sign in sheets grading classroom activity preparation and execution etc. as needed
Oversee afternoon study hall and tutoring Mondays-Wednesdays
Attend resident assistant training in person on 05/19-05/21 and regular staff meetings during the summer program as scheduled
Follow and enforce ICC and Upward Bound policies and procedures
Supervise and engage with participants
Work closely with the Summerfest instructors Head RA RAs Upward Bound staff and other ICC staff to execute and supervise all Summerfest classes and study hall
Maintain accurate documentation
Serve as a positive role model for all Upward Bound participants
Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Summer Academic Assistant for the Upward Bound Program position. Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to (30) pounds or more carrying supplies equipment
This position requires the ability to sit or stand or walk for extended and various periods of time. It also requires constant hand grasp and finger dexterity; extended standing walking and repetitive leg and arm movements; occasional bending; reaching forward sidetoside downward and overhead; and squatting and kneeling
The ability to effectively learn new computer programs and applications as necessary; the ability to effectively troubleshoot changing computer software issues
The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people with an excellent comprehension of the English language is essential
Work is performed primarily in an indoor setting
Provide own transportation to and from campus and appropriate licensing to operate college vehicles
Provide own cell phone and calling plan



Compensation: $2200.00 per year

Independence Community College (ICC)is a two-year educational institution accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It was established in 1925 as grades 13 and 14 of the Independencepublic school 1967 Independence Community College legally separated from the school district. Construction of the new community college on a 68 acre campus formerly the Independence Country Club began in 1969. Classes at the new site began in September 1970. ICC campus is now home to the Academic Building Fine Arts Building Student Union Cessna Learning Center Field House Administration BuildingWilliam Inge Center for the Artsfitness center athletic practice fields disc golf course 96-bed multi-structure living complex and a 200 bedresidence hall.

By renovating a donated building in 2010 we expanded our college to include ICC West (2615 West Main Street). This campus is located on the west side of Independence and is home to our technical programs: Allied Health Cosmetology and GED/ renovations were completed in 2012 to accomodate our newest program Veterinary Technology. This state-of-the-art facility includes animal wards a classroom lab surgery pharmacy prep roomsmall animal treatment food prep grooming and radiology.

ICC also maintains presence downtown through the ICC Foundation office and by partnering with the Independence Business Resource Center.

Currently our educational and support programming includes 35programs of studyfor Associates of Arts and/or Science degrees 11programs of study for Certificate completionStudent Support ServicesUpward Bound mens and womens athletic programs and a variety ofcampus organizations and activities.
