Great opportunity to support active forest management in Vermonts publicly-owned forests. This position will focus primarily on timber sale preparation with some responsibilities in silviculture and timber stand improvement on federal and state lands.
Major duties will include:
Interpret complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guidelines to designate timber for harvest
Cruise timber to estimate volume and value using a variety of cruising methods and forest mensuration equipment
Locate and map timber sale boundaries with GPS considering factors such as transportation system topography fuels management silvicultural objectives wildlife needs stream protection and other resource considerations.
Forest data collection forest inventory and support for reforestation activities including stocking surveys seed collection and plantation survival surveys
May performs other multifunctional work as assigned including but not limited to timber sale administration recreation wildlife and fire management.
Requirements for this position include:
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of forestry and other natural resources disciplines.
Considerable knowledge of forest tree species and forest vegetation common to Vermont.
Knowledge of forest ecosystem management principles and practices.
Awareness of forest road and trail construction and maintenance techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Skills in using basic computer software.
Skills in gathering and analyzing technical forestry data.
Skills in the application of Geographic Information Systems software and other mapping tools including Global Positioning Systems are preferred.
This position Forestry Specialist II - Temporary(Job Requisition # 54451) is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.
