Job Description:

Are you interested in learning how child welfare policy is shaped at the state level The Division of Children and Family Services (CFS) is seeking an organized and motivated Policy and Legislative Intern to assist with policy development legislative research and program alignment within Nebraskas child welfare system.

This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to understand how laws and regulations translate into real-world practice for children and families served by DHHS.

Location: Lincoln NE - ONSITE


What Youll Do:

  • Support updates to child welfare policies and procedures.

  • Conduct research on state and federal laws best practices and policy trends that impact CFS programs.

  • Assist in developing and reviewing policy and procedural documents to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

  • Help prepare legislative impact statements policy briefs and other documents to support the legislative session.

  • Collaborate with CFS policy staff and program specialists to understand how policies are implemented in the field.

  • Participate in discussions on improving processes and ensuring consistency across programs.

What Youll Learn:

  • The connection between legislation policy and field operations in child welfare.

  • How to research and analyze federal and state laws.

  • Best practices in writing reviewing and implementing policy.

  • The legislative process and how DHHS supports and responds to bills impacting children and families.


Requirements/ Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).

Preferred Requirements:

  • Interest or coursework in public policy social work child welfare political science or related fields.

  • Strong written and analytical skills.

  • Ability to research organize information and summarize findings clearly.

  • Familiarity with or interest in Nebraskas child welfare system or public service.
