WHATS THE JOB
The Gym/ Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the camp gym facility ensuring a safe clean and welcoming environment for all users. This role manages equipment sign-in/sign-outs facility reservations (i.e. gold simulator) equipment maintenance cleaning and supports health and safety compliance. The coordinator is responsible for planning organizing and delivering recreational wellness and leisure programs. This role enhances camp morale supports mental and physical wellbeing and fosters a positive community atmosphere. The coordinator ensures activities are safe inclusive and aligned with camp policies and schedules.
This position requires fly-in/fly-out travel from Edmonton or Calgary Alberta to the project site in northern Alberta with potential for weather-related delays or logistical challenges. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer Service / Village Hoteling Centre
- Greeting guests ensuring a welcoming atmosphere.
- Build positive relationships with camp residents to understand interests and participation barriers.
- Promote activities through posters announcements digital platforms and in-person engagement.
- Manage guest facility and equipment reservations (i.e. gym gold simulator).
- Manage and track equipment being signed in/out by guests.
- Foster an inclusive respectful and welcoming environment.
- Uphold gym rules and monitor compliance.
- Enhance guest satisfaction by offering attentive luggage services efficiency and a positive first impression in the Village Hoteling Centre as per operational requirements and needs.
- Assist guests with luggage handling and storing at the Village Hoteling Centre while offering courteous support and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
Program Planning & Delivery
- Develop and implement a diverse range of recreational programs (i.e. fitness classes sports leagues arts activities)
- Create weekly and monthly activity calendars tailored to shift schedules and camp demographics.
- Lead group activities and encourage participation from all camp residents.
- Adapt programming to seasonal conditions and available indoor/outdoor spaces.
Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean and disinfect gym equipment mats and surfaces regularly.
- Ensure all areas are tidy organized and hazard-free.
- Monitor for safety concerns or misuse of equipment.
Facility & Equipment Management
- Maintain a visible and helpful presence on the gym floor.
- Oversee recreation spaces such as gyms outdoor fields and multipurpose rooms.
- Maintain equipment inventory ensuring items are clean safe and in good working condition.
- Coordinate equipment repairs or replacements as needed.
Health Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all activities follow safety protocols and company policies.
- Conduct risk assessments for events and physical activities.
- Update applicable sections of the weekly operations meeting and minutes.
- Actively participate and attend twice daily and twice weekly safety meetings.
- Completion of personal daily hazard assessment (FLHA).
- Respond to minor incidents and escalate emergencies appropriately.
Administration & Reporting
- Track attendance participation trends and program feedback.
- Prepare reports for camp management on program success and improvement opportunities.
- Manage recreation budgets supply orders and vendor relationships when applicable.
Physical Demands:
- Extended periods of standing walking and on-site presence in a remote location.
- Ability to lift carry and move items up to 50 lbs.
- Work in varying environmental conditions including extreme weather.
Qualifications :
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of a college program in recreation physical education or a related field.
- Previous experience in customer service or gym operations.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) is a plus.
- Valid drivers license and ability to travel as required.
- 35 years in gym-coordination/administration
- Attention to detail; clear written and verbal communication; customer-service mindset.
- Ability to manage competing priorities calmly in a fast-paced remote environment.
Working Conditions:
- Project-based role with primary work on the Suncor Firebag In-situ site.
- Ability to work long shifts and rotational schedules (e.g. 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off)
- Endurance to function effectively in remote northern climates including extreme cold wind or lack of daylight during certain periods.
- Resilience under isolation conditionslong periods away from home with limited external contact.
- Fly-in/fly-out arrangement; shared accommodations and meals provided while on-site.
- Extended periods away from home with possible weather-related travel delays.
- Must comply with all company and client health safety and operational standards.
Other Skills and Competencies:
- Strong client service focus with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and operational management tools.
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety compliance.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.

Work schedule and remuneration:
Remote Camp Gym/Fitness Coordinator work on a rotational schedule in a remote camp setting in Nunavut. They may be required to work weekdays weekends and general holidays. The hourly rate is $22.00-$25.00 dependent on experience.
