This position is open to all CUPE employees. Preference will be granted in accordance with the Collective Agreement for CUPE local 1479 to permanent internal candidates. Temporary employees will have their applications considered prior to external applicants.

Hourly Rate:

$40.48 per hour

0.4375 FTE

Assignment:

Effective immediately.

Working 3.5 hours a day 5 days a week.

Position Summary

The Open Book Instructor provides high quality instruction and services to adults seeking essential skills upgrading in writing communication math and digital literacy skills. The I nstructor reports on project activities and learner progress in government-support digital platforms. The Instructor will assess clients develop individual learning plans and deliver task-based learner-centred instruction and programming in an in-person classroom environment located at Open Book in Kingston.

Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary education and a certificate in Literacy and Basic Skills or Adult Instruction are preferred or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience delivering literacy programming or related instructional programming to adults seeking essential skills upgrading in writing communication math digital literacy and pre-employment skills
  • Experience with creating and administering curriculum demonstration activities and goal-directed learning activities
  • Experience in planning and delivering instruction in alignment with Employment Ontario Initiatives particularly LBS Program Guidelines and OALCF and their connections to employment is preferred
  • Experience in instruction of Adult Literacy and Basic Skills is an asset
  • Knowledge of LBS standards and policies and community support agencies roles
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement literacy curriculum and differentiated instruction for adult LBS learners
  • Strong pedagogy curriculum development and assessment skills
  • Ability to demonstrate good classroom management strategies
  • Ability to accept motivate support and be sensitive to learners from difficult backgrounds - e.g. socio-economic barriers.
  • Ability to use digital technology in varying ways as a creative means to teach adults
  • Ability to conduct client skills and needs assessment and engage clients in development of the client training plan
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues and outside agents within a third-party purchase-of-service environment
  • Demonstrated experience working with marginalized populations overcoming systemic barriers
  • Knowledge of EOIS Cams participation and database.
  • Ability to support learners in numeracy written and oral language skills (not just ESL or English).
  • Ability to welcome learners who may not typically feel welcome in a formal educational institution
