How youll impact our mission:

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a full-time Wildlife Rehabilitator to care for thousands of orphaned and injured wildlife and to provide guidance and support to thousands of callers who have questions about wild animals in the community. The Wildlife Rehabilitator reports to the Wildlife Program Manager and is an onsite role at our Milwaukee Campus. Key accountabilities:

  • Providing excellent client service in person via email and over the phone to diverse clients.
  • Admitting and triaging patients assisting with basic diagnostic procedures and offering first aid and providing humane euthanasia when needed per WHS guidelines.
  • Animal care including cleaning feeding enrichment and administering treatments in indoor and outdoor facilities.
  • Following practices to limit stress for animals and prevent zoonotic disease transmission
  • Maintaining accurate animal care records
  • Training and supporting volunteers seasonal staff and interns
  • Commitment to continuing education.

Qualifications:

  • Wildlife experience or completion of undergraduate or graduate coursework in biology wildlife management ecology natural sciences pre-veterinary or related fields preferred.
  • Up to date on tetanus vaccination. Must receive rabies vaccine within 2 months of hire date if not already rabies vaccinated; WHS covers the costs of pre-exposure rabies vaccine and rabies titer checks.
  • Available to work some evenings a weekend shift and some holidays
  • Able to obtain certified euthanasia by injection status within 3 months of hire and Wisconsin Wildlife Rehabilitation Basic License within 6 months of hire
  • Demonstrated alignment with our mission people-centered philosophy and organizational values of compassion respect and kindness; innovation; professionalism; equity; and positive approach
  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work
  • Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job which include stooping kneeling crouching crawling standing walking pulling lifting grasping and repetitive be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Hiring range: $14.56-$16.27/hour With the ability to add up to another $1/hour for licensure and EBI certification within the first year of employment.

It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee Ozaukee Racine Door Brown and Kenosha Counties as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis and a wildlife rehabilitation center in Milwaukee.
