Position Description

SIT Graduate Institute seeks a full-time Assistant Professor in Sustainability Studies who will teach and advise on our PhD in Sustainability program as well as the Global Masters degree in Sustainable Development Practice. We seek an interdisciplinary scholar whose research and teaching explore the intersections of environment society and policy in pursuit of sustainable and equitable futures. Candidates may specialize in areas such as climate resilience and adaptation sustainability transitions water and food systems socio-environmental governance science and technology studies (STS) natural resource management sustainability sciences or environmental/land use planning and policy.

The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in quantitative research design analysis and data science applications relevant to sustainability studies and demonstrate the ability to teach quantitative methods and data analysis as part of their regular course load. We welcome applicants employing mixed-methods and participatory approaches to sustainability research that explore the complex interactions among social ecological and technical systems across local and global contexts. SIT faculty are expected to engage in applied and interdisciplinary scholarship that connects local realities to global systems often through partnerships with communities NGOs and research networks across Africa Asia Latin America and the U.S. Our faculty teach both in person and online and must have a command of inclusive active learning strategies in both contexts. SIT programs emphasize experiential field-based learning systems thinking and intercultural engagement.

SIT faculty must remain current in their areas of expertise and familiar with practices in higher education. They are expected to be active members of the SIT community giving service to the institution and acting as thought leaders in institutional initiatives.

SIT strives to be respectful of and compliant with local labor and employment laws. When circumstance warrant the academic director will have a local employment contract through an affiliated local entity or as determined by SIT. The position is full-time for the entire contract period.


Responsibilities

  • Teach graduate courses in sustainability studies environmental change and their area of specialization including quantitative methods and applied data science.
  • Advise masters and PhD students supervise research projects and engage in community-based scholarship aligned with SITs mission.
  • Contribute to curriculum innovation integrating social ecological technical and policy dimensions of sustainability into program design.
  • Collaborate with and support various SIT departments on matters of admissions marketing assessment operations human resources and student safety and wellbeing.
  • Participate in school governance and service fostering collaboration across SITs global network.
  • Develop and sustain a research agenda that advances scholarship in sustainability resilience or environmental justice.
  • Conduct site visits to programs.
  • Possibly provide on the ground support in cases of emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) in Sustainability Studies Environmental Science Geography Political Ecology Environmental Policy Data Science or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in quantitative research methods and data science including data collection management analysis and visualization.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching research and student mentorship.
  • Evidence of potential for community-based participatory or transdisciplinary research.
  • Ability to teach across multiple levels (MA doctoral) and to design inclusive field-based curricula.
  • Commitment to social and environmental justice diversity and global education.
  • Experience teaching graduate students in person and online.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with international intercultural comparative or community-embedded fieldwork.
  • Research that bridges quantitative and qualitative inquiry connecting policy data and lived experience.
  • Record of externally funded research creative public scholarship or professional engagement.
  • Experience advising graduate-level research or practice-based capstones.
