Job Summary

Job Summary (in List Format):

- Position: Director of Nursing (DON)
- Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred
- Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in applicable state
- Experience: Five (5) years in management/leadership and long-term care preferred; acute/rehabilitation experience preferred
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) desired
- Skills: Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills required

Key Responsibilities:

- Leadership & Administration:
- Plan organize staff direct and control nursing services within the facility/department
- Ensure care is delivered efficiently courteously professionally and in compliance with company/federal/state/local standards
- Hold administrative authority and accountability for nursing services
- Act as facility administrator in their absence

- Clinical Oversight:
- Develop revise and implement standards of care policies and procedures
- Ensure patient/resident rights are respected and confidentiality maintained
- Advocate for patients/residents and address complex care needs
- Direct and support nursing staff in care delivery and problem-solving
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team and other departments
- Oversee safe medication administration and infection control practices

- Quality Improvement:
- Advocate and ensure safe delivery of patient care
- Participate in safety infection control Q.A. disaster and patient rights committees
- Maintain licensure and required certifications
- Ensure proper use operation and maintenance of nursing equipment
- Monitor and improve quality of care through audits and corrective actions
- Participate in and lead quality improvement initiatives and committees

- Staff Education & Development:
- Lead and participate in staff orientation and ongoing education
- Assess staff learning needs and develop appropriate educational programs
- Act as resource mentor and role model for nursing staff
- Facilitate student nurse affiliations and act as preceptor as needed
- Encourage and participate in professional growth and research

- Personnel & Resource Management:
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels and oversee hiring of nursing staff
- Integrate nursing care with other healthcare providers
- Counsel evaluate and manage performance of nursing personnel
- Resolve staff conflicts and ensure adherence to policies
- Develop and manage staff schedules including on-call and attendance
- Direct staff in emergency situations and oversee controlled drug management
- Assist in budget planning and prepare reports for administration

- Communication & Collaboration:
- Conduct staff meetings and communicate significant events to administration
- Coordinate with other departments regarding patient/resident care
- Intervene in incidents involving employees or visitors as needed

Requirements:

- Current unencumbered RN license
- Proficient in English (reading writing speaking)
- Strong decision-making leadership and supervisory skills
- Knowledge of nursing/medical practices laws regulations for long-term care
- Ability to plan organize implement and evaluate nursing programs and objectives
- Patient tactful enthusiastic and able to handle difficult situations
- Willingness to learn and implement new nursing practices
- Ability to communicate patient/resident conditions appropriately
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace
