Job Summary

This position is an educational learning opportunity for adult students enrolled in degree programs in the human services field. The position is a twelve to fourteen week part-time internship for undergraduate college students to get hands-on experience and on-the-job training working in shelter housing and services for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence who are seeking immediate protection and stability.

Interns are expected to work 20 hours per week and the pay rate is $20 per hour.

The position will end on June 30 2026.
  • In order to be considered for this internship applicants must meet one of the following education requirements:
    A current college student undergraduate or graduate level studying psychology social work sociology counseling education public health or another human services related field.
  • Recent college graduate within the last year with a degree in psychology social work sociology counseling education public health or another human services related field.
SUMMARY
The Safehouse Advocate position aids individuals and families requiring assistance by performing the following duties. The Safehouse is operational and staffed (24) hours per day (7) days per week.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Ensure safety of clients to include monitoring admission into the building video cameras and walk-throughs.
  • Assume responsibility for all scheduled and unscheduled Helpline calls/shifts and Chatline shifts.
  • Learn to complete shelter screenings to determine candidate meets program requirements.
  • Become more knowledgeable and implement the Trauma Informed Care philosophy by creating a safe therapeutic living and working environment for our clients which espouse the proactive principles of growth change and empowerment of the individual.
  • Provide support to clients individually in family or in other small groups regarding plans for meeting immediate and short-term needs and aid clients to mobilize inner capacities and environmental resources to improve social functioning.
  • Assist in co-facilitating structured information groups to Safehouse clients with the goals of enriching clients knowledge in functional life skills and exploring issues faced by people in abusive relationships
  • Access and record client and community resource information.
  • Maintain and accurately document contacts in client files as well as in the database system.
  • Meet regularly with the Safehouse Director.
  • Assist in providing case management support to Safehouse clients through advocacy and referrals following the action plan developed by the Case Manager.
  • Oversee client chores in order to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of the Safehouse Program.
  • Performs light janitorial duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS
Successful completion of a criminal background check is required to maintain this position. The employee will also be required to complete the SARCs 26-hour Basic Crisis Response Training within 30 days from the date of hire. The employee must be willing and able to attend ongoing Trauma Informed Care trainings and webinars to stay current with up to date trends in intervention.


Required Skills:

Necessary Skills: Knowledge of intensive psychosocial services such as casework group work and individual and family therapy. Ability to work under pressure within time constraints. Knowledge of and adherence to laws policies procedures and ethical standards of the counseling profession. Willing and able to attend ongoing Trauma Informed Care trainings and webinars to stay current with trends in intervention. Excellent speaking and listening skills. Requirements for Consideration: Minimum of a Bachelors Degree is required preferably within Human Services. Previous experience managing people. Valid drivers license and a clean driving record within the provisions of the agencys policy. The ability to complete SARCs 30-hour Basic Crisis Response training within 3 months of the date of hire. Preferred Experience: Experience working with vulnerable populations and victims/survivors of domestic violence sexual abuse and stalking.
