Job Summary

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Demonstrated customer service experience
  • Experience developing and delivering educational content such as leading games or activities for the public and children
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification

Assets:

  • Current registration in or completed post-secondary degree or diploma in Education Biological or Environmental Sciences Drama History Recreation and Leisure Studies or a related field
  • Experience working in another interpretive facility
  • Demonstrated knowledge of natural history and/or human history

Skills required for success:

  • Delivery of educational content such as leading activities or games with the general public leading tours and experience working with children (including group management skills)
  • Knowledge of local natural history and/or human history and knowledge of exotic plants (Muttart Conservatory)
  • Engage with and provide excellent customer service to the public
  • Excellent verbal communication skills such as speaking clearly & enthusiastically effective voice projection and the ability to connect with diverse audiences by adapting your word choice how you explain concepts and your tone of voice
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion
  • Alignment with the goals of the City Plan

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C is a requirement of this position
  • Ability to attend any and all required training
  • Stating your availability to work and maintaining consistent availability upon hire into this position
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety protocols is required
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends holidays and evenings
  • Physically fit and able to lift up to 25 lbs perform repetitive movements and engage in active games
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • Have transportation to work at various locations in the city
  • Must be able to start work as early as 7:00 a.m. and flexible to working evening & night shifts
  • Ability to move around for extended periods including on slopes and stairs; work outdoors in all weather conditions; and handle supplies such as lifting tables and chairs
  • You may be exposed to dust high noise levels and animals depending on the facility
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

As a Natural & Human History Interpreter at the John Walter Museum Muttart Conservatory the John Janzen Nature Centre and other locations you will inspire motivate and connect guests to Edmontons history local plants & animals and exotic plants & animals from around the world.

What will you do

  • Lead and assist in developing a variety of educational programs including school & group programs day camps birthday parties and other registered programs
  • Deliver drop-in programs & activities for the general public which consist of crafts games reading stories performing experiments roving guided hikes/tours group presentations and theatrical activities like role playing
  • Engage with and provide excellent customer service to the public including children parents/guardians teachers participants and group leaders
  • Manage group dynamics and behaviours including resolving conflicts between program participants
  • Respond to incidents including those requiring first aid
  • Oversee volunteers during programs like day camps and at special events
  • Assist in the maintenance of artifacts exhibits and program supplies
  • Set up and clean up program activities and events including lifting of tables and chairs
  • Independently research program content & activities and complete administrative tasks
  • Work at the John Janzen Nature Centre Muttart Conservatory John Walter Museum and other locations in the city based on facility needs
  • Perform other related duties as required
