Job Summary

The Deputy Director of Lean Analytics will develop and reinforce a mindset of continuous improvement and lean strategy as a critical element in building and sustaining a world-class transit agency. The MBTA launched an organization-wide lean effort in 2017 expanding the program to effectively increase organizational productivity and ensure reliable safe service. With a data-driven focus on project-based process improvement and standardization initiatives the Deputy Director will work closely with project sponsors across the authority to further integrate lean methodology into the MBTAs organizational culture. The position will report to the Director of Lean Strategy and lead cross-functional analytical and project management activities as well as support facilitation of lean events trainings and programs.

To ensure the MBTA stays on top of the latest trends in transit and related industries this position will be critical for building and maintaining strong working relationships within the organization and with external transportation entities and continuous improvement/lean sectors.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams to streamline and modernize operational processes by digitizing refining and standardizing workflows to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Communicate effectively and partner closely with both frontline staff and department leaders to understand day-to-day challenges and translate insights into practical implementable solutions.
  • Conduct data-driven analyses including deep-dive root cause assessments to diagnose issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute high-level detailed analytics and descriptive statistics in low data environments including the development of KPI dashboards to track performance outcomes and operational health.
  • Design and manage continuous improvement cycles using Lean Six Sigma methodology and a Plan-Do-Review framework.
  • Perform primary and secondary research to identify industry best practices and benchmark organizational performance.
  • Prepare and deliver executive-level presentations for departmental and senior leadership.
  • Produce formal documentation such as policies Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) how-to guides etc. to operationalize changes and ensure effective improvement implementation.
  • Build program and initiative-level models to calculate ROIs payback periods labor justifications and other components of cost-benefit modeling.
  • Develop robust working relationships with a diverse set of internal MBTA and external stakeholders
  • Perform any additional assigned tasks involving data cleaning data analysis qualitative and quantitative analysis and writing and proofreading proposals and project reports.
  • Support MBTA lean training programs as required including Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt and Green Belt training and workshops.
  • Participate in team meetings staff meetings organization events and other duties as necessary.
  • This position is hybrid work eligible reporting primarily to an office environment with occasional trips into the field to inspect/observe projects or other infrastructure conditions including visits to stations the right of way and other work sites.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) years of full-time ten (10) years of part-time or a combination of experience in quantitative analysis operations manufacturing project management or other related field.
  • Two (2) years of leadership people management and/or large projects
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage time resources people and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead initiatives from concept through implementation while managing timelines dependencies and communicating impacts.
  • Excellent communication analytical and presentation skills with the ability to obtain buy-in with key stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrate data-driven decision-making skills and ability to conduct program analysis identify Key Performance Indicators and build management dashboards.
  • Have the ability to learn quickly take direction and work independently and to use creative collaborative and consultative approaches to resolve issues
  • Experience packaging complex projects for executive-level or similar presentations
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and comfort working with data reporting and operational systems with the ability to quickly learn new platforms as required.

  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce

Substitutions Include

  • A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelors degree requirement.
  • An Associate Degree from an accredited institution with an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelors degree requirement.
  • A Masters Degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.
  • A nationally recognized certification or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Experience in transit transportation or public service
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma continuous improvement methodology
  • Experience with both operational and financial data sources and analytics
  • Experience with Tableau or other data visualization tools

Job Conditions:

  • Ability to effectively read comprehend communicate and respond to instructions orders signs notices inquiries English.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston MA metro area as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.

  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.

  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned directed or necessary for this position including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions emergencies or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op. Additionally interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Numberprior to starting pre-employment screenings / pre-boarding working in their positions and throughout the duration of their program.
